Tigran Hamasyan: Shadow Theater

Con questa nuova opera, pubblicata due anni dopo A Fable, Tigran Hamasyan conferma la connessione col folklore armeno in una prospettiva nuova, mostrando d'essere un artista avventuroso e visionario, non solo un magnifico pianista.
Eccetto pochi brani folk le musiche sono originali, presentate in una veste tanto innovativa quanto intrisa di valori tradizionali. Il progetto ha avuto un'elaborazione molto lunga: le melodie base sono state scritte da Tigran sei anni fa (quando aveva vent'anni) e per questo progetto le ha arrangiate con una scrittura ricchissima di situazioni in rapido sviluppo e palpabile contrasto: la concitazione del rock d'avanguardia s'incontra/scontra con momenti d'intenso lirismo, la ricerca d'avanguardia con abbandoni folk, le parti strumentali con quelle vocali, le sonorità acustiche con quelle elettroniche, interventi jazzistici con frammenti cameristici e quant'altro. Tutto in un turbinìo di quadri in rapido mutamento che Tigran dirige dal pianoforte con passione e lucidità.

Tra i suoi parner troviamo il batterista Nate Wood e il sassofonista Ben Wendel, due componenti dell'eclettica band trasversale Kneebody, la cui energia dà forza e passione alle sottili e suggestive trame liriche della cantante Areni Agbabian.
Il percorso musicale evidenzia alta maturità progettuale ma necessita di più ascolti per essere apprezzato appieno. Come s'è detto la scrittura è ricchissima di soluzioni e la frenesia dei mutamenti può suscitare una certa stanchezza: Tigran è comunque abile a introdurre, all'interno dei brani e tra un brano e l'altro, momenti d'incantevole lirismo che ripagano pienamente l'ascoltatore. Ricordiamo a questo proposito il dolcissimo "Lament," l'inno tradizionale armeno "Pagan Lullaby" e "Holy," tema liturgico del compositore armeno dell'ottocento Makar Yekmalyan.
