L'iniziale "Nichilismo" è brano breve, secco, tagliente nelle sonorità, nervoso nello sviluppo, senza punti di riferimento. Il successivo "The Fake Five" ha un andamento lento, avviluppa l'ascoltatore tra le spire di una melodia incantatoria che nasconde sotto la superficie segnali di pericolo imminente, di sogno pronto a trasformarsi in incubo.

Sono queste le coordinate principali attorno alle quali orbitano gli altri nove brani di Rust and Blue, ultima fatica discografica di Ivan Valentini. Niente di rigido o di prefissato s'intende, piuttosto delle pennellate, delle macchie di colore come quelle riportate sulla immagine di copertina ed evocate dal titolo dell'album, riferito da un famoso dipinto di Mark Rothko.

A volte le esplorazioni sonore intraprese sembrano non giungere da nessuna parte, nate dal nulla e nel nulla scomparse, ma con l'effetto sorprendente di dare profondità all'ascolto, di rendere vididi i colori circostanti, di spingere oltre l'immaginazione. Le suggestioni che si vengono a creare attingono a vari ambiti stilistici -dal rock progressivo alla musica contemporanea, da una delicata psichedelia al downtown newyorchese -ma poco importa perché la miscela di scrittura e improvvisazione del quartetto è decisamente efficace, coerente e personale.
