Francesco Cafiso: Portrait in Black and White
Giunto alla soglia dei venti anni il sassofonista ragusano dimostra in questo suo nono disco, prodotto da Tetsuo Hara, una personalità artistica con molti tratti di maturità, dimostrandosi capace di padroneggiare creativamente la splendida tecnica strumentale per far spazio alle idee.
Il suono s'è fatto interessante, lasciando emergere un incisivo feeling ed un fraseggio ammirevole per equilibrio ed espressività. Il percorso musicale è una sequenza di standard che egli affronta con autorevolezza, unendo senso della misura e attenzione alle sfumature espressive.
Le esecuzioni sono nitide e brillanti e, soprattutto sul finale, emergono momenti particolarmente interessanti, con una approccio più disarticolato e creativo.
Ma la riuscita del disco non è merito del solo Cafiso ed i suoi partner contribuiscono ampiamente al valore dell'opera. Un talento da evidenziare, sicura promessa del nostro jazz, è il giovane trombettista Dino Rubino che da un anno collabora con Cafiso e si mette particolarmente in evidenza in "Portrait an Black and White," il brano migliore dell'album. Non hanno invece bisogno di presentazioni il pianista Giovanni Mazzarino e il bassista Nello Toscano che confermano tutta la loro professionalità e bravura.
