Metropole Orkest: Perfect Vision - The Esquivel Sound

Gli universi paralleli esistono, perlomeno in musica. Negli anni dal 1958 al 1962 il jazz statunitense ha vissuto una fase innovativa così ricca e variegata da assorbire totalmente gli appassionati (fino a oggi), portandoli a tralasciare quanto coesisteva nel vicino universo della pop music.
In quegli anni l'industria discografica aveva scoperto il potenziale suggestivo del suono stereofonico e martellava la massa dei consumatori puntando su slogan come "Full Dimensional Stereo," "Living Stereo" o "Stereo Action." Nacquero così molte orchestre per esaltare gli effetti sonori trasmessi dagli impianti di riproduzione a due (e poi quattro) casse: non era importante la qualità artistica ma ricreare le suggestioni di un'orchestra nel salotto di casa.

Una delle più interessanti è stata quella del messicano Juan Garcia Esquivel e non è un caso che Vince Mendoza celebri la sua musica con questo lavoro, dirigendo l'olandese Metropole Orkest . La musica di Esquivel è stata etichettata col termine "Space Age Pop" per evidenziare le suggestioni spaziali che suscitava con variegate combinazioni orchestrali e vocali: percussioni, fischi, strumenti esotici (jawbone, boo-bams, harpsichord ecc) e coretti leziosi che esclamavano "Pow!," "Zu-zu-zu," "Boing!." Di jazz c'era poco e l'improvvisazione era assente ma Esquivel aveva eleborato uno stile originale che Mendoza riporta a galla con meticolosa precisione.

Il progetto è stato ideato dal produttore Gert-Jan Blom negli ultimi anni della direzione orchestrale di Mendoza e registrato tra il giugno e settembre 2012 (dal 2013 la Metropole Orkest è guidata da Jules Buckley): il risultato è accattivante e per chi non conosceva la musica di Esquivel sicuramente insolito (e un po' sconcertante).
Il repertorio presenta alcuni dei temi più famosi dell'orchestratore messicano scomparso 12 anni fa. Le partiture originali sono andate perdute e l'arrangiatore Stefan Behrisch le ha ritrascritte a partire dai dischi. Solo un perfezionista come Mendoza poteva ricreare quel clima fino ai dettagli.
L'appassionato di jazz intransigente può confrontarsi da subito con classici come "Lullaby Of Birdland," "Take The A Train" o "Cherokee."Se resiste fino alla fine, può passare agli altri.
