Hayes Greenfield: Peace of Mind

With a charged-up quartet interpreting originals that honor the careers of heroes such as John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, Hayes Greenfield explores the wide-ranging fields that encompass modern jazz. His alto saxophone sounds off with breathtaking tirades that thrill.

Greenfield's last album, Jazz-Ma-Tazz, was for children. This one goes much further, bringing together generations of jazz lovers in an affair that includes exotic impressions from all around the globe.

"Tea for Three" is a soprano saxophone waltz that allures with its rolling waves and rhythmic syncopation. Like Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," this selection drives forcefully while keeping the audience at ease. "Peace of Mind" soars gently on high with its soprano luster, as Greenfield reminds us of the soothing quality that music holds when presented just right. This one flows like water over a rustic meadow on a hot, summer afternoon. "Blues for Now" takes us to New Orleans for a shuffle that erases the tension of the day through different means. Cannonball Adderley would readily accept its sincere hospitality.

Greenfield sings "That's All I Have to Do" and lends his buoyant alto saxophone personality to the loping affair. The rambling ballad offers more peace of mind to a session that's already primed to put you in a groove.
