Jason Rigby Detroit-Cleveland Trio: One

Jason Rigby Detroit-Cleveland Trio: One
The stimulating One is saxophonist Jason Rigby's third release as a leader and the most accomplished addition to Rigby's discography. The sparse trio setting and the intimate ambience allow Rigby to showcase his multifaceted compositions and his superb improvisational skills. They also demonstrate the sublime synergy among the band members as well as Rigby's command of his instrument.

The tense "Dorian Gray," for instance, opens with bassist Cameron Brown's nimble and swinging refrains. Drummer Gerald Cleaver brings a funky feel to the tune with his vibrant and confident beats. Rigby builds an intriguing, spontaneous song with short and ardent phrases that alternatively coalesce and diverge in clever and thrilling formations. Brown solos with agility and a laid-back groove that is nevertheless quite passionate.

Brown and Cleaver provide the rumbling backdrop on the melancholic "Live By The Sword." Rigby blows yearning and fiery lines that form an expansive and lyrical extemporization that is peppered with dissonant hints. Cleaver's thundering polyrhythms add an expectant edge and a sense of urgency.

Cleaver and Rigby duet on the riotous "Dive Bar" demonstrating seamless synergy. Cleaver's rolling drums open the piece with a thrilling ferocity. Rigby contributes intense and warm staccato fragments that form the basis for his improvisation. He embellishes the original melody with raw energy and unfettered abandon. The musical conversation becomes more turbulent and angular before the concluding bars.

Rigby interprets the standard "Embraceable You" unaccompanied. He evocatively deconstructs the main theme with intelligence and elegance. Crisp and shimmering cascade of notes follow one another in a logical sequence and hints of bluesy emotion. The result is a fluid and crystalline gem.

One is a mature and stirring work that highlights the Rigby's unique and polished style and his organic and edgy sound. Simultaneously provocative and charismatic this cohesive album is highly enjoyable and makes for a satisfying listening experience.
