Tuscia in Jazz

We have arrived at the ninth edition of the Tuscia in Jazz Festival. Other than the change in name, we have also changed the venue, moving to a fixed location in the heart of the Monti Cimini, the beautiful Soriano nel Cimino. The festival has been strongly supported by the local administration of Soriano and it now returns to the squares of the historical centre, and thanks to the administration's continous support, all the concerts are free. Born in Ronciglione in 2002 as Ronciglione Jazz, it was obvious after the first few years that the festival needed an international name. Now considered one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe, it is proud of its patrons, which include: Ministero dei Beni Culturali, Regione Lazio, Fondazione Carivit, Provincia di Viterbo, Camera di Commercio and Comunita Montana dei Cimini. In addition to these patrons, we have our regular international sponsors: Grappa Zanin, Warsteiner Beer, and financial organizations such as Carivit. Today, with its new name, Tuscia in Jazz, the Festival has become a product of 'Tuscia' and an important vehicle for the worldwide promotion of this beautiful area of Etruscan origin, full of Roman history, mediaeval hill towns and unspoiled lakes and forests. This year from the 17th of July through to the 2nd of August, Soriano nel Cimino will become one of the world's Jazz capitals and for 20 days, artists from all over the world will be performing on its stage. International and European premiers to delight both passionate Jazz followers and newcomers to this great 19th century melody.

Tuscia in Jazz is divided into: Jimmy Woode Award and Tuscia in Jazz Masterclass (Soriano nel Cimino), Nepi in Jazz (Nepi), Civita Summer Jazz Meeting (Bagnoregio), Ronciglione Jazz (Ronciglione), Oj Festival (Vasanello), Canepina in Jazz (Canepina) and Vitorchiano Jazz (Vitorchiano).

Jimmy Woode Award

The 'Jimmy Woode Award' was created in collaboration with Shawnn Monteiro daughter of Duke Ellington's double bass player who died recently. Aimed to young jazz musicians under 30 years old, it was always planned to become one of the most important awards worldwide.

Many youngsters from all over the world met every year at the Tuscia in Jazz Festival to take part in this award. Many important and famous musicians have been part of the jury, such as: Benny Golson, Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller, Buster Williams, Eddie Gomez, Bobby Watson, Ray Mantilla, Tony Monaco, Rick Margitza, Joey De Francesco, Bobby Durham, Jimmy Cobb, Francisco Mela, George Cables, Flavio Boltro, Dado Moroni, just to mention a few. The competition is divided into seven days, with two semifinal groups playing every evening, knocking out each other to directly access the final. Here, eight groups contend the prize, that is presented to the winners by members of the Woode family themselves. Many of the winners form the past editions have taken part to the recordings organized by the festival and have played alongside the greatest names of the jazz world on the stage of Tuscia in Jazz.

The winners of last years edition is Karim Blal Trio (Italy).

Tuscia in Jazz Masterclass

The Tuscia in Jazz workshops are a perfect opportunity for young players from all over Europe and beyond to deepen their knowledge and experience of jazz in a rich and stimulating international musical environment. For 2010 we have engaged teachers of the highest calibre including Dave Libeman, Flavio Boltro, Antonio Sanchez, Shawnn Monteiro, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddy Gomez,Tony Monaco, Dado Moroni, Giorgio Rosciglione, Gege Munari, Karl Potter. The success achieved in previous years and the presence of great teachers has given the workshops the reputation of being the most important in europe.

Nepi in Jazz

Is held in mid August inside the beautiful Borgia Castle, recently restored by the local administration, in the city of Nepi. Nepi, who's famous water is known worldwide, is a delightful little town 35 km from Rome. Of interest are the amazing waterworks built throughout the centuries and the incredible mediaeval and Reinassance fortifications around the city. Nepi in Jazz, with its four days of concerts is one of the most exciting moments of the Tuscia festival, thanks to the beautiful location and brilliant acustics of the Borgia-Castle.

Civita Summer Jazz Meeting

Bagnoregio and Civita di Bagnoregio also take part in the Tuscia in Jazz Festival. The organizors of the Tuscia jazz festival and the local administration of Bagnoregio have got together to organize the Civita Summer Jazz Festival from the 2nd to the 8th of August 2010. So, from next year, one of the most breathtaking locations of the area will also be part of the jazz circuit. Civita di Bagnoregio and its beautiful old village, will be, during that period, invaded with musical notes. For the occasion, there will be two stages, one in Bagnoregio and one in Civita di Bagnoregio. Every evening there will be two different concerts at different times and these will be completely free of charge. On the 7th of August, a so called “White Night" will be organized with the collaboration of the various societies of the area and there will be activities all night long. The project Civita Summer Jazz also includes a grand meeting dedicated to jazz, in collaboration with Jazzitalia, Jazzconvention, Jazzit and other important media organizations.
