Last year Universal CEO Doug Morris was publicly hawking a concept called TotalMusic that he envisioned as some kind of unlimited music service not unlike Nokia's Comes With Music. One idea that Moriss floated had manufacturers like Zune building the price of the service into the cost of their portable players. Then there was silence...

Now it appears that TotalMusic is re-focusing on playlists under the monikor Tunepost. Former Director of AOL Music and current TotalMusic VP Of Product Management Jason Herskowitz has posted a sample playlist widget on his blog and ou can get on a list for beta invites here. Beyond that, details are scarce.

With support from the world's largest label group Universal, Tunepost should be able to avoid the licensing battles that crushed MuxTape and are crippling Project Playist. What they do with their legal head start and how well they can monetize it in a down economy is worth watching closely.
