Coco Zhao exemplifies the international focus of the jazz festival
Coco Zhao is a living refutation of the rumour that jazz doesn't exist in China.
As John Orysik, organizer of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, puts it, Jazz is a global music," and few events in last year's festival proved it more than this young man from Shanghai who, according to Orysik, proved hugely popular" after his appearance.
He returns this year, tonight and Wednesday, at Performance Works on Granville Island, 9 p.m., to perform his original jazz compositions in his own language with violinist Peng Fei and a top jazz ensemble from Quebec called Jazzlab.
His vocals have been described as haunting, cool and soulful and the range of his voice is high and feminine, evoking the singer Jimmy Scott.
