OAKLAND EAST BAY SYMPHONY PRESENTS THE HEIGHT OF ROMANTICISM, FEATURING THE WORLD PREMIERE BY BANDLEADER, COMPOSER AND DRUMMER SCOTT AMENDOLA FEATURING NELS CLINE OF WILCO
PLUS TCHAIKOVSKY'S 4th SYMPHONY AND BERNARD HERRMANN'S SUITE FROM ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S FILM VERTIGO
The Oakland East Bay Symphony (OEBS) presents an evening of intensity and drama with its concert The Height of Romanticism, held at 8 pm on Friday, April 15th at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. Venturing through two different eras and regions, OEBS will explore obsessive love with Bernard Herrmann's Suite from “Vertigo," one of Alfred Hitchcock's most well-known films, as well as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, a piece full of the passion and longing experienced by the composer during a time of great personal turmoil and closely associated with two women. A world premiere by Scott Amendola entitled Fade to Orange completes the journey through different time periods and represents the fourth and final New Visions/New Vistas premiere. Amendola will be joined by Nels Cline, lead guitarist for the alternative rock band Wilco, and bassist Trevor Dunn. A pre-concert talk with Amendola and John Kendall Bailey begins at 7 pm.
About the Artists Drummer and composer Scott Amendola graduated from Berklee College of Music before heading west to San Francisco. Shortly after his move, he joined the innovative band T.J. Kirk, which was nominated for a Grammy in 1995, before he joined the Charlie Hunter Quartet. After touring worldwide and recording 3 records for Blue Note, Amendola started a new project: The Scott Amendola Band, which nurtures his talents as both drummer and composer.
Nels Cline has been touring and recording as lead guitarist with the alternative rock band Wilco since 2004 but has been heavily involved in the West Coast's improvisational scene since the 1970s. In addition to being part of groups such as Quartet Music, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline Singers, he has toured internationally with a variety of bands, scored two films and written and produced music and albums for himself and other artists. In 1999, the California Music Awards named Cline Outstanding Jazz Artist of the year. He recently released two CDs in 2010, including a collaborative work Dirty Baby with poet and producer David Breskin inspired by 66 period images by the artist Ed Ruscha.
Bassist Trevor Dunn formed the experimental band Mr. Bungle with Mike Patton and Trey Spruance in 1986, with which he toured and released three full-length studio albums. He has also been part of groups such as Secret Chiefs 3, Fantômas, and created his own band trio-convulsant. After a hiatus from writing rock music, Dunn formed the band MadLove, which released its debut album in 2009.
