'Antigua' is a hidden gem from Jobim’s Wave album that caught my attention early on. I knew I wanted to record it. The melody is both powerful and unique—it’s not one of the Bossa Nova standards that everyone has already done.

Peyton Griffin, a jazz pianist from the suburbs of Seattle, releases his third single, “Antigua,” a vibrant musical portrait inspired by the beauty and celebration of island life.

Drawing from the warmth and rhythmic elegance of Bossa Nova, Griffin reimagines “Antigua,” a classic composition by Antonio Carlos Jobim , infusing it with a contemporary sensibility while honoring its roots. The result is a lush, expressive performance that showcases Griffin’s deep connection to the genre and his evolving artistic voice.

Listeners will hear the influence of some of Griffin’s most formative inspirations, including Vince Guaraldi. While “Antigua” translates to “ancient” or “old” in Spanish, Griffin’s interpretation bridges past and present—evoking the early Bossa Nova movement while showcasing his own refined approach to arrangement, touch, and tone.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Peyton continues to mature beyond straight-ahead jazz, blending tradition with modern expression. “Antigua” reflects this growth, offering listeners both a sense of nostalgia and a fresh perspective

“Antigua" is a hidden gem from Jobim’s Wave album that caught my attention early on,” says Peyton. “When I first heard my mentor Philippe’s trio perform the piece, I knew I wanted to record it. The melody is both powerful and unique—it’s not one of the Bossa Nova standards that everyone has already done. For me, it evokes the beauty and diversity of the Island. It’s catchy, groovy, and deeply expressive.”

“Antigua" is now available to stream anywhere.
