Academy Award Winner David Seidler to Be Honored at Our Time Gala on April 11th; Best Actor Oscar Winner Colin Firth Confirmed as Honorary Chair, as 'The King's Speech' Shines a Global Spotlight on Stuttering with Best Picture Win
Superstar Carly Simon to Perform at Gala as Well
Our Time congratulates their 2011 Gala Honoree David Seidler on his Academy Award for writing this year's Best Picture, 'The King's Speech.' Watch his Oscar acceptance speech, in which he accepts the award on behalf of all the stutterers throughout the world." In addition to Best Picture and Seidler's Oscar for writing, the film earned Academy Awards for Best Actor Colin Firth and Best Director Tom Hooper.
Our Time is thrilled to honor David Seidler's achievements, as he is feted at their 9th Annual Gala, April 11th, 2011, in NYC.
'The King's Speech' has spawned a global dialogue on stuttering, much in the way that 'Rain Man' did for autism many years ago. Few films in history have captured the fear, shame, and social stigma associated with stuttering as honestly and poignantly as this historical drama.
In 'The King's Speech,' an actor (Geoffrey Rush's character, Lionel Logue) uses arts training to instill confidence in a man whose stuttering almost stood in the way of his destiny to lead England during a turbulent time of war. The film, like Our Time, reinforces the importance of building confidence and addressing the emotional implications of stuttering. 'The King's Speech' is promoting widespread awareness about stuttering, which is part of Our Time's mission.
The film's star Colin Firth has been confirmed as Honorary Chair for Our Time's event, which focuses on the theme 'I Could Be King' (Firth will not be in attendance, but has lent his support to the worthy cause). Superstar Carly Simon (last year's Our Time Honoree,) is confirmed to perform multiple songs.
