Music Business Institute announces the musical line-up for the nola DOWNTOWN music and arts festival in New Orleans

Sylvain Music Notes—The Music Business Institute (MBI) has released its lineup of musical acts for this month's “nola Downtown Music and Arts Festival" which takes place September 23-24, 2011 in the historic Lafayette Square in New Orleans. The festival is part of this year's 19th Annual Cutting Edge CE (formerly the Cutting Edge Music Business Conference and Roots Music Gathering) conference which runs from September 21-24 at the Pan American Conference and Media Center on Poydras and St. Charles Avenue.

The festival will feature local, national, and international acts from places as far as Canada, London, and Guadeloupe. featuring various genre of music; including showcase performances from the Stephanie Jordan Big Band (New Orleans); Brass-A-Holics “Gogo Brass Funk" Band; Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band (Zyedeco); Grand Baton (Creole Rock); Frankie Ford & Friends (Indie Rock); One Vision One Voice (School Funk); Gospel Soul Children (Gospel); Rebel Society (Latin Rock); Austin Urban Rhythm and Blues Revue; Fire Bug (Indie Rock); Black Market Butchers (Rock); Tanya Boutte (Jazz/R&B); Marlon Jordan (Jazz); and Davis “The Real DJ Davis" Rogan (New Orleans Jazz Funk) whom HBO writer producer David Simon based a character on for the HBO Treme series.

The conference brings together established and aspiring entertainment professionals from across the country; including ASCAP and BMI led panels consisting of “crash courses" and “hot topic" which provide proficiency within the music and film industry. Taking place in the Central Business District and the Warehouse Arts District the festival also celebrates the revival of Downtown New Orleans.

Some of the noted conference speakers include National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Chairman Darryl B. Cohen, producer of the Primetime Emmy Awards; Tour:Smart's author Martin Atkins; London's Tony Moore; Bad Boy South Records' Rico Brooks; and Island Def Jam Music Group's Senior Vice President Jonathan McHugh among others.

Performances will include NewWorks Showcases for new and emerging artists seeking special exposure to record executives, booking agents, managers and the media. In addition to day time exposure, showcases of all styles of music are arranged in the evening at nightclubs and other venues. Musical groups scheduled to participate in these showcases include, A. These NewWorks Showcases will take place at Hard Rock Café, Howlin' Wolf, Le Roux Supper Club, The 12 Bar on Fulton, The Big Top Gallery, Pan American Media Center, and other locations.

“As we approach our 20th year the Cutting Edge opens its new chapter with a new event and new collaborations. We anticipate the “nola Downtown Music and Arts Festival" to become the signature event of Downtown New Orleans, particularly for the young professionals who work and live downtown" says lead festival producer Eric Cager. Co-organizer Vincent Sylvain adds, “Not since Tulane University was downtown has New Orleans' CBD had such a cultural mix of commercial, residential and artistic scenes. From the art, music and culture . . . , “Downtown New Orleans is the Place to Work, Live and Enjoy! That's what makes this festival a natural."

This year, Cutting Edge has also collaborated with events produced by the New Orleans Actors Resource Center which are designed to enhance career development and professional opportunities for actors and aspiring actors in Hollywood South. Partnering with Cutting Edge to create the largest entertainment professional-development event in the Gulf South, the Louisiana Actors Expo takes place during the conference at the same location on September 23 and 24, 2011.

Two new programs have been created for writers and filmmakers: The Treatment Project, for writers and aspiring writers who want to learn how to craft a winning treatment, and Pitch to Producers, where filmmakers learn how to effectively pitch their projects to producers and investors. Among the list of confirmed speakers are: Eric Thompson, Vice President at Twentieth Century Fox; Patrick Mulhearn, Director of Studio Operations, Raleigh Studios, Baton Rouge; Jason Hewitt, Writer/Director/Producer, Films In Motion; Matthew Dickens, Writer/Director/Actor/Producer; Steven Esteb, Writer/Director/Producer, “Dirty Politics"; John Keller, Associate Producer and subject of Will Smith's “The American Can"; Leonard Joseph, Producer/Actor; Henry Griffin, WGA Writer; Brent Caballero, Producer/Casting Director, Caballero Casting; Lisa Marie Dupree, Casting Director, Films In Motion; Ryan Glorioso, Casting Director, Glorioso Casting; Hank Langlois, Casting Director, Caballero Casting; Anne Massey, Casting Director, Anne Massey Casting; Gary Marsh, founder and CEO of Actors Access and Breakdown Services; Jim Johnson, founder and CEO of AccentHelp; Liz Atherton, Agent, TAG Talent; Dawn Landrum, Agent, Landrum Arts; and Jessica O'Day, Agent, and Moxie Agency.

Environmentally-conscious as well, the festival will feature some of the latest innovative green technology as well as some green vendors and eco-friendly service demonstrations.

The nola Downtown Music and Arts Festival will span three days with the epicenter of activities being across from Gallier Hall in Lafayette Square. The festival will feature:

  • Popular music acts from international and local music scene.
  • Energy/Green efficient lifestyle products demonstration.
  • Entertainment entities featured at the Business Opportunity Expo.
  • 24 Hrs of Films presented Downtown.
  • Cutting Edge Lounge Tour 2011 at Downtown nightspots.
