June 8, 2010; Monterey, CA; The Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce its two-week Summer Jazz Camp for middle and high school students, taking place at Monterey Peninsula College, June 14 - 25, 2010. This year, 150 students from over 30 schools in Monterey County and beyond will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz study and performance with a star-studded line-up of professional musicians and educators. As part of its long-standing commitment to jazz education, the Monterey Jazz Festival has offered a total of $82,000 in subsidies for participating students, making the camp not only educationally rewarding and fun, but financially accessible as well.
The MJF Summer Jazz Camp is an intensive immersion program for young jazz students to learn and develop music skills and knowledge, with classes including big bands, small ensembles, vocal performance, instrumental master classes, and daily workshops on different music subjects. The camp also includes special sessions for students to attend combo rehearsals and theory classes. MJF staff expect total enrollment of 150 young musicians to participate in this valuable music endeavor, keeping classes and ensembles to a small size. The students, ranging in age from twelve to eighteen years old, earn two units of credit from Monterey Peninsula College at the completion of camp.
Students will have the opportunity to show off their newly-honed skills in recital performances for fans, friends, and family with free performances by hand-selected combos at the Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium, and the Vocal Ensembles and Big Band Concert at the Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium. Although not the main focus of the program, the Camp Concerts are always a lot of fun and provide the campers the opportunity to perform in a relaxed atmosphere and in front of a supportive hometown audience, said Dr. Rob Klevan, Education Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival. The Vocal Mic Night and the Monday Night Jam Session have become staples of the camp for the last several years, and this time weve brought them to Fishermans Wharf at Gilbert's Seafood Grill Restaurant, so there is an echo, so to speak, from the Next Generation Festival.
The Student Jam Session will take place at Gilbert's Seafood Grill Restaurant at 30 Fisherman's Wharf on Monday, June 21, at 6 pm, with an additional Vocal Mic Night on Tuesday, June 22, at 6 pm, also at Gilbert's Seafood Grill Restaurant. The Combos Concert will take place Wednesday, June 23 at 7 pm at the Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium, with the Vocal and Big Band Concert taking place on June 24 at 7 pm at the Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium in Pacific Grove.
This year's MJF Summer Jazz Camp will be highlighted by the presence of the Monterey Jazz Festivals 2010 Artist-In-Residence, Dianne Reeves. A Blue Note recording artist since 1987, Dianne Reeves is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today. As a result of her virtuosity, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings, Reeves was awarded the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings: In The Moment: Live in Concert (2000); The Calling (2001) and A Little Moonlight in 2003 -- a Grammy first in any vocal category. She has recorded eighteen albums as a leader, and has appeared on dozens of others with such artists ranging from Stanley Turrentine, Steps Ahead, Lou Rawls, McCoy Tyner, George Duke, T.S. Monk, Lenny White, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2002, Reeves performed at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and also made an appearance and performance on the season finale of HBO's Sex and the City. In 2003, Reeves was appointed to be first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2005, Reeves appeared and performed in George Clooneys film, Good Night, and Good Luck. The soundtrack recording from the film provided Reeves her fourth Best Jazz Vocal Grammy in 2006. In 2007, Reeves was featured in Robert Levis Emmy, Peabody and Writers Guild Award-winning documentary, Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life. After several years of extensive touring, Dianne took a break back in Denver, and in 2008, she released her first Blue Note album of new material in five years, When You Know.
In addition to Ms. Reeves, the camp's roster of instructors continues to feature many of the finest jazz educators in the country. 2010 faculty include saxophonists Paul Contos and Virginia Mayhew, trumpeters Peck Allmond and Michael Galisatus, trombonist Robynn Amy, drummer Vince Lateano, bassist Scott Steed, guitarist Bruce Forman, pianist and Monterey Peninsula College instructor Eddie Mendenhall, and renowned vocalists Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh. Committed to training young instructors in the art of teaching, the camp also invites talented alumni of the Monterey County High School All-Star Band and Jazz Camp to mentor younger students. In 2010, the MJF Summer Jazz Camp has welcomed back trombonist Mark Stotzer, drummer Jesus Vega, guitarist Alex Govan, violinist Noah Freedman, bassist Ryan Grech, and pianist Milton Fletcher to its faculty.
