Like many musicians of his generation, saxophonist Brecker was attracted in equal measure to R&B and the music of John Coltrane. In 1970, he left home for New York and joined a band led by drummer Billy Cobham. Subsequent gigs included work with the jazz-rock group Dreams, Horace Silver, James Taylor and Yoko Ono. With his brother, Randy Brecker, he formed the Brecker Brothers, which became one of the pre-eminent fusion units. In the early 80s he toured and recorded with David Sancious and recorded as Steps Ahead, for many the definitive jazz rock group. Much in demand, Brecker also freelanced with a wide variety of jazz and pop artists, including McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, John Lennon, Pat Metheny, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock and John Abercrombie. In 1987, at the prompting of Impulse! Records, he started recording as a leader. Brecker's smooth, strong version of Coltrane's middle-period playing has been much imitated by mainstream and session players. In 1991, he was a featured soloist on Paul Simon's Rhythm Of The Saints tour. Tales From The Hudson became a major success for him in 1996 and he won a Grammy in 1996 for the Best Instrumental Solo (on Impressions") and in 1997 for Best Jazz Performance. Brecker made his debut for Verve Records in 1999 with the excellent Time Is Of The Essence.
A nine-time GRAMMY winner Michael Brecker is considered one of the most daring, impassioned solo artists in all of jazz.
For his Iridium appearance this week Michael will showcase music from his newly released Verve CD, Wide Angles. Wide Angles is a suite of ten pieces arranged for an ensemble of 15 players (QUINDECTET) that amply reveals Brecker to be one of the today's foremost composers. The music will be inspired, lyrical, powerful and evocative.
