Bassist Mark Wade brings his trio to Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, Maryland for a concert featuring selections from his latest (2018) album, Moving Day. The New York based trio also includes pianist Tim Harrison and drummer Scott Neumann.
Voted one of the top 10 bassists of 2018 and 2016 by the prestigious Downbeat Magazine Reader’s Poll, Mark Wade has been active in the NYC jazz scene for 20 years. He has played with other notable jazz artists such as James Spaulding, Harry Whitaker, Peter Eldridge, Don Byron, and The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra, and appeared on The Today Show with Stacey Kent. He has performed jazz at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, The Iridium, and Birdland, and has numerous classical programs to his credit. On the Lehigh University jazz faculty, he is also a New York Pops Teaching Artist.
Wade released his debut album, Event Horizon, to international acclaim in 2015 and followed up with Moving Day in 2018. Preston Frazier of Something Else Reviews voted Moving Day the best jazz album of 2018. The recording was called “one of the most interesting piano trio albums of the year" by Marco Cangiano of the New York City Jazz Record. It was named by Sammy Stein one of the top albums of 2018 for the Jazz Journalists Association and drew glowing praise worldwide.
The Montpelier audience will hear originals from Wade’s albums along with beloved standards given unique and tasteful treatments. “In the Fading Rays of Sunlight” is the first song he wrote for Moving Day. He recounts: “I was just coming out of the studio when I stopped by a park in the summertime, just as the sun was setting. The beauty of that moment inspired me to try to capture it through music.” His composition “Midnight in the Cathedral” was described in Archaic Pop: “Imagines a listener sitting in a cathedral in the middle of the night and experiencing all the different music that has been played in that building over the years echoing together in the rafters.”
Wade will shape shift a jazz classic with “Another Night in Tunisia.” His arrangement uses an extension of the iconic bass line to reconfigure the form and harmony. The result is a constant surprise in tonality and timing that fools the listeners expectation. In another creative move, he combines “Autumn Leaves” and Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage.” Jazz in Europe calls the arrangement “an interesting and intriguing take on both.” Moving Day is available in Europe on Edition 46 Records (Berlin) and worldwide through Mark Wade Music.

About Tim Harrison
Pianist Tim Harrison is a native of Nottingham, England. He studied classical flute at the Royal College of Music in London and worked as a professional flutist for eight years. At the age of 26 he took up piano. One year later, he won a scholarship to the University of North Texas to study jazz piano. After receiving his master’s degree Harrison co-led the Unified Jazz Ensemble, a quintet that for four years lived, performed, and taught in small towns in Iowa and Arkansas for the National Endowment for the Arts. He moved to New York in 1996, where he performs, composes and teaches.About Scott Neumann
Since arriving in New York City in 1988, drummer, composer, and educator Scott Neumann has been involved in a diverse and creative mixture of musical experiences. He leads and composes for two acclaimed (and very different) bands, Neu3 Trio (Origin Records) and Osage County (Chicken Coup Records). Scott has toured Europe, South America and Asia with such luminaries as David Liebman, Madeline Peyroux and the Woody Herman Orchestra. He appears on over 60 recordings as a sideman. He toured for nearly a decade on the Jam Band/Electric Bluegrass scene with the Tony Trischka Band and the Jazz Mandolin Project and has performed in the orchestras of over 20 Broadway productions. He is a busy clinician and has been the director of drum studies at Lehigh University since 2005.
