Jose Castro Is Creating Music For A World Without Borders

Jose Castro Is Creating Music For A World Without Borders
Jose Luis Castro, who also performs under the stage name J. Jeaux, came up in a music business that no longer asks artists to stay in one lane. The old categories — recording artist, producer, composer, sound designer — still exist, but for many modern musicians, those lines have started to blur. Castro, who records under the name J. Jeaux, is one of those artists: a Mexico-born composer, producer, and sound designer who is widely-recognized in the music industry for his moves between jazz, R&B, and pop, as well as video game scores, music libraries, recording albums and singles with various artists, and leading and full-scale production pipelines.
Jose Luis Castro, who also performs under the stage name “J. Jeaux," came up in a music business that no longer asks artists to stay in one lane.

That range has become his calling card. Under the stage name J. Jeaux, Castro releases music rooted in jazz, R&B, blues, and funk — songs that feel intimate on the surface but reveal, on closer listen, the instincts of someone who knows how to build sound from the inside out.

On his singles “More Than Enough" and “Overflow," Castro did not simply step into the booth as a vocalist or instrumentalist. He handled the music himself, performing and producing the singles while overseeing the process from pre-production through post-production. The same is true for “Overflow," which folds together R&B, pop, blues, and funk, balancing polyphonic synth lines with minimalist percussion and a sense of emotional tension: heartbreak set against motion, sadness pushed forward by groove. “More Than Enough," his debut single as J. Jeaux, introduced a similarly layered approach. The song was praised for its world-building melodies, warm analog atmosphere, contemporary R&B vocal lines, and rhythmic control. Both tracks reveal the dual nature of Castro’s work: the feel and technical ability of a world class performer who can compose and produce music at the highest level. Earlier this year, he released his highly anticipated single “The One," a track that further demonstrates Castro's modern approach to R&B, with jazzy influences, latin guitars, and his unique approach to R&B and neo-soul. It is innovative, fresh, and something every music fan needs to hear.

That combination was sharpened in Los Angeles. From 2017 to 2018, Castro worked with Chris Hanebutt and Studio DeVille as a recording engineer, who loaned his talents to recording sessions for the studio’s clientele. Studio DeVille, founded by Hanebutt, has been connected to major brands, production companies, and entertainment networks, including Roland, Coca-Cola, the NBA, KFC, Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, FOX, NBC, Lionsgate, and OWN.

By 2019 and 2020, Castro had moved into a broader leadership role with Fine Tune Music, serving as lead composer, arranger, orchestrator, music producer, and recording artist. Fine Tune Music is a music production and licensing company whose clientele includes major television and film production companies such as ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, The CW, and MTV. Its catalog has been licensed for programs including “America’s Got Talent," “Dancing With the Stars," “The Real Housewives," “The Bachelor," “Top Gear," “Penn & Teller: Fool Us," and “The X Factor."

His work with Chris Hanebutt / Studio DeVille and Fine Tune Music highlight Castro's work in an essential, but often underappreciated aspect of the entertainment industry: the creation of original music for music libraries and catalogs that are later licensed by major productions.

Today, more and more artists and production companies look to studios that maintain these libraries and catalogs and license pre-recorded music, rather than hiring a composer directly. Composing this type of music requires a very specific skill set. In that world, the composer has to think differently. A song or cue must stand on its own, but it also needs flexibility, emotional clarity, and production polish. It has to be memorable without crowding the scene it may eventually support. This is a skill that Castro has developed over many years, which has led to him being one of the most sought-after composers for music catalogs and libraries in the industry.

Jorge Arenas, who also works with Grammy-winners and has licensed music to numerous programs for MTV, Bravo!, CNN, and several other networks, has hired Castro to compose music for his catalog. In 2024, he brought that same skill set to Off Trail Studios, where he composed and produced for various projects for the international company, which has studios in Los Angeles and the United Kingdom.

If Castro’s catalog and studio work shows his command of recorded music, his video game work reveals another side of his creative identity: world-building. In games, sound is not decoration. It is architecture: the music tells players where they are, what matters, when to move, how to feel, and what to expect.

With Bears & Guts, Castro served as lead composer and sound designer on “WOMG," leading the audio team, composing the soundtrack, designing and composing sound effects, programming music for the game, and overseeing recording and production; he also led the audio work for the game’s expansions and updates from 2024 to 2025. For a game like “WOMG," described as an educational game, sound and music becomes part of the learning environment itself. The score and effects are not simply there to fill silence; they help organize attention, create feedback, and shape the player’s experience. In that sense, Castro’s contribution goes beyond music supervision or sonic branding. He is helping define how the game feels to inhabit.

His commitment to game audio is also entrepreneurial. In 2021, Castro founded 8-Bit Studio, a company specializing in the production, composition, and recording of music, audio effects, and sound design for video games. He serves as its lead composer, music producer, instrumentalist, and recording artist. The company reflects a larger through line in his work: a belief that game audio deserves the same level of musical and technical seriousness as music for any other medium. That focus carries into his work with Cortes Productions. Since 2023, Castro has served as the company’s lead composer and sound designer for its projects, including the flagship game “Mogrimera: Disciple of Order." For that title, he composed and arranged the music, designed sound effects, led the recording of all the music and oversaw its implementation into the game.

His résumé also runs through the independent recording world. Castro worked with Nashville-based recording artist Phoenix Lazare and composed and recorded her single “Under the Light," which became Lazare’s most successful single to date. He also served as composer and music producer for an album recording with artist Alexis Rodriguez, a project that took place from 2023 to 2024 and was recorded at Silver Gun Records in Los Angeles.

Castro’s career demonstrates what it means to be a multitalented artist in today's music industry. He weaves together his ability as a performer, composer, songwriter, music producer, and sound designer into one unique and cohesive skill set. Over the course of his career, he has developed his own distinctive area of expertise that fuses all of these talents together, which allows him to move fluidly between different projects and studios. His expertise and experience in each of these areas comes together and enhances and informs all his work. This has made him one of the most well-known and sought-after artists in the music industry. He has also been tapped by California College of Music to bring his talents to their “Music Production & Songwriting" program and their recording studios, he is set to produce and compose music for the Grammy-nominated artist Arantza Vazquez, and as part of his work with Piecrust Studios, he is will be producing an upcoming EP by the acclaimed recording artist Diego Lacroix, whose album “Bicycle Stories," has been very well-received by critics and fans.

Castro’s work suggests a new kind of artist: one who can compose a video game score, write a hook, shape a soundscape, educate, design sound, lead the entirety of a recording project, build an audio cue, understand how all of these things can come together to create something new and unique while engaging listeners across a variety of mediums. Jose Luis Castro's music can be sung, licensed, played, and even inhabited, which sets him apart from other artists working today.
