Seattle-Tacoma, WA: Joey Cohn has been named General Manager of KPLU and Jazz24, after assuming the duties of Interim General Manager in April 2014.

Cohn is nationally known for his expertise in programming jazz and has consulted with NPR, Verve Records and a number of public radio stations around the country. Under his leadership, KPLU was named the Marconi Jazz Station of the Year and twice received the national Edward R. Murrow award. Cohn also launched Jazz24, KPLU’s 24-hour jazz stream, which is public radio’s most listened to online music stream.

Prior to being KPLU’s Interim General Manager, Cohn was Assistant General Manager/Director of Content. He was hired at KPLU in 1987 as Morning Jazz Host and Music Director. Over the years, he’s held a variety of positions at KPLU including Marketing Director, New Media Director and Program Director.

KPLU is the third NPR station for which Cohn has worked. The others are KJZZ in Phoenix and KUAT in Tucson, where he started his career while a student at the University of Arizona. He also worked in commercial rock radio in Phoenix and was the Program Director of the nationally-syndicated TV show, The Music Channel, which was carried on the Satellite Program Network (SPN).

“I feel very privileged to be KPLU’s new General Manager,” Cohn says. “We’re excited about KPLU’s future with goals to create new content, grow our audience through new media and increase our leadership role in the community.”

“Joey has proven to be an entrepreneurial and collaborative leader and continues to push KPLU’s traditional strengths in regional news gathering and jazz programming into new arenas including global streaming and innovative content partnerships,” said Donna Gibbs, vice president for Marketing & Communications at Pacific Lutheran University.

Ranked as one of the most popular public radio stations in the nation, KPLU provides award-winning local and NPR news and jazz to the Puget Sound region through a broadcast network of 10 signals including 88.5 FM in Seattle-Tacoma and 89.3 FM serving Victoria, B.C., and its digital platforms. KPLU reporters cover the region from studios in Seattle, Tacoma and throughout the state. KPLU’s all-jazz web service, Jazz24, is one of the most listened-to music streams in the world at Jazz24.org and can also be heard on KPLU’s HD2 channel. KPLU’s mission is to inform, educate and entertain the public, increase appreciation of the arts, and promote a deeper understanding of the human condition. KPLU is a community service of Pacific Lutheran University.
