Exactly thirty-five years after his first life-changing encounter with Jackie McLean at the Artists Collective, saxophonist Jimmy Greene returns to the Collective with his quintet on June 12 to celebrate the release of his latest album, As We Are Now (Greene Music Works). Joining Greene for this special night are the same all-star musicians who appear on the recording: guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist Aaron Goldberg (original member of the Artists’ Collective Twin Towers Quintet, alongside Greene, in 1994), bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Jonathan Barber (both Artists Collective alumni). As a bonus, audience members will be able to purchase CDs and 180-gram vinyl copies of As We Are Now weeks before its July 25th release date on radio, streaming and online platforms!
A native of Bloomfield, Connecticut, Jimmy Greene is one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation. As We Are Now marks Greene’s thirteenth release as a bandleader. Greene’s 2020 release, While Looking Up (Mack Avenue) was described by one reviewer as “...a wonder. Rapture enveloped in gold.” His 2014 release Beautiful Life (Greene Music Works/Mack Avenue), honoring the memory of his daughter Ana, received two GRAMMY Award nominations – one for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and another for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for his song “When I Come Home.”
Greene has garnered awards in composition from ASCAP/IAJE, Chamber Music America, and the State of Connecticut, in addition to being named the 2018 winner of DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll in the Rising Star Soprano Saxophone category and First Runner-Up in the 1996 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Greene has well over one hundred recording credits to his name, performs worldwide with his bands and has recorded and/or performed in the bands of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Harry Connick, Jr., Tom Harrell, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kenny Barron, among many others.
