Shedrick Mitchell

Shedrick Mitchell, a name synonymous with the highest level of musicianship emerges from a 23-year hiatus following his first solo recording to offer a musical panacea that is most relevant for the times, “Time – Reflections – Distance.” A collection of hymns, this offering of solitude is an invitation to meditate, pray and distance oneself while the world makes way for a new normal.

“Time – Reflections – Distance”, Shedrick’s sophomore recording to be released June 2020, is a departure from his decades long career spanning over 200 recordings with icons including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Jay-Z, R-Kelly, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terrance Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Tom Wopat, Robert Randolph and many others. Why now? “Time – Reflections – Distance” represents a culmination of inspiration, influences and purpose that speaks to the challenges we all face today.

Shedrick Mitchell’s musical roots are deeply planted in Gospel/Christian music and yet extend far beyond to jazz and New Age. His influences are beautifully woven into a signature sound that brings light into darkness, healing to the broken-hearted and illuminates the soul.

The idea for “Time – Reflections – Distance” came in the stillness of Shedrick fighting the virus, himself. During his time of isolation, the gift of reflection brought clarity, which strengthened him in his process of healing. His hope is that this collection of songs will do the same for many more.

Following his recovery of COVID-19 and after having recorded “Time – Reflections – Distance”, Shedrick has a renewed appreciation for things so easily taken for granted: the many blessings of life, and of course the luxury of just being able to walk into a studio and make music.

Thomas Marriott: Screen Time

Read "Screen Time" reviewed by Paul Rauch

Seattle-based trumpeter Thomas Marriott has been producing notable jazz recordings for more than a quarter century now with remarkable consistency in terms of both musicianship and composition of original works. After a decade in New York as a young musician, following his winning of the prestigious Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition, Marriott settled back in Seattle and produced a litany of albums featuring top Northwest musicians. At one time or another he engaged with all of his upper-left colleagues, ...

Clarence Penn: Behind the Voice

Read "Behind the Voice" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Drummer Clarence Penn, a serious force on the scene for more than three decades, has worked with a who's who of vocalists--Betty Carter, Kandace Springs, Luciana Souza, Kate McGarry, Nellie McKay, Claudia Acuña, Paula Cole, Melissa Walker and Nneena Freelon, to name just a few. He knows more than a thing or two about history and creativity behind the voice, and he's here to show it with this sharply-constructed date. Working with a stacked lineup of singers and instrumentalists, and ...

Hanka G: Universal Ancestry

Read "Universal Ancestry" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

For a recording that combines, jazz, rock, gospel soul and r&b with Slovakian folk melodies, look no farther. Hanka G, who has artists as different as Abbey Lincoln and McCoy Tyner as her models, was raised in Mongolia, coming to the United States in 2018. This is her first stateside recording, and it is an innovative album for people fond of crossing cultures, mindscapes, ethnic and racial boundaries. She kicks things off with a grittier, rougher version of ...

Chien Chien Lu: The Path

Read "The Path" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

For vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu, the path to jazz wasn't direct. She rode a contemporary classical percussion track into her twenties in her native Taiwan, but, as it turned out, that drive was less about reaching a destination than it was about the act of discovery: A growing desire for musical freedom and adventure eventually set Chien Chien on a different course, steering her toward jazz and a life in New York. Now, after making herself comfortable in the jazz ...
