2011 Convention “Unity Through Diversity: Many Flutists, One World"


Charlotte, NC: The National Flute Association will host its 39th Annual Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, August 11-14, 2011, at the Charlotte Convention Center and the Belk Theater at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center including performances and workshops by some of the most exciting jazz and world flutists. The public is invited to attend the concerts and workshops Thursday through Sunday, and to visit the largest flute trade show in the world.

Concerts at the Belk Theater at 130 N. Tryon Street in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13 at 8 PM will feature some of the world's top jazz and world music artists. Grammy Award winning world/fusion artist Rhoda Larson and Turkish flutist Omar Faruk Tekbilek will headline Friday night's World Music Gala Concert. Omar Faruk Tekbilek is one of the world's foremost exponents of Middle Eastern music, blending classical, folk, Arabic, and Egyptian. On Saturday at 8 PM, the Concerto Gala Concert will open with Mike Wofford's specially commissioned “Tapestry 39" for strings, the Professional Flute Choir, and the Jazz Flute Big Band conducted by Bruno Ferrandis. The concert will also feature leading soloists in jazz, classical and 21st century music including Jean Ferrandis, Holly Hofmann, Christina Jennings, Marina Piccinini, and Carol Wincenc performing works by Gordeli, Foss, Uebayashi, Schnyder, and Jobim.

Late night jazz can be heard in the Westin Hotel Lounge at 601 South College St in Charlotte on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 10:30 pm—midnight. Jamie Baum will perform her own originals and Brazilian and Latin-influenced styles on Thursday, contemporary/pop and smooth jazz flutist Nelson Rangell will be featured on Friday, and Saturday night, the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band will perform with Ali Ryerson, Roger Neumann, and Bryan Kennard leading winners of the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band Competition in a performance with special guest appearances by Holly Hofmann and Madeline Vergari.

The days will be filled with jazz as well, with workshops, exhibitor showcases, and concerts with jazz artists and composers Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a special Flute Youth Day presentation on Saturday featuring 14 year old rising star jazz flutist Zachary Kellogg and a special guest appearance by astronaut/flutist Cady Coleman, who played from the space station with Ian Anderson.

The National Flute Association is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1973 and is the largest flute organization in the world. Membership in the NFA and attendance at the convention is open to all flutists and flute enthusiasts. The NFA has approximately 6,000 members from all 50 states and 50 countries. Its outreach activities to date include commissioning more than 70 works for flute, scholarships, publication of The Flutist Quarterly, and the largest lending library of flute music in the world.

Individual tickets for all events range from $10 to $30, and will be available at the registration desk at the Convention Center during the convention. Tickets for the evening gala concerts are $30 or $20 for students and will also be sold at the door of the Belk Theater.
