It's almost redundant to sing the praises of drummer Jack DeJohnette. He's as comfortable in the modern mainstream setting of pianist Keith Jarrett's longstanding “Standards Trio" as he is in the purely improvisational setting of his duets with guitarist Bill Frisell, The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers on his own Golden Beams Productions imprint. But equally, he's completely at home on the more hard-edged collaborative tribute to the late drummer Tony Williams with guitarist John Scofield and keyboardist Larry Goldings, Trio Beyond.

Contributing Editor Paul Olson managed to catch DeJohnette at a rare instance where he wasn't recording or touring, to discuss his career, his new label and Trio Beyond's debut on ECM, Saudades.
