Nancy Wilson Sounds Forever Young at JVC Jazz Festival Salute to Her 70th Birthday

Nancy Wilson Sounds Forever Young at JVC Jazz Festival Salute to Her 70th Birthday

Source: All About Jazz

NEW YORK: Nancy Wilson is hardly the retiring type, even though she is trying to spend more time with her grandchildren these days. Last year, the singer retired from touring, but she continues to record -- her last album “Turned to Blue" won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album earlier this year -- and perform selected concert dates. On Friday night, she found herself sharing the Carnegie Hall stage with many old friends -- including three of the top ...

Trumpet Star Enrico Rava Sees Italian Jazz Blossom

Trumpet Star Enrico Rava Sees Italian Jazz Blossom

Source: All About Jazz

July 2 -- Enrico Rava is the most internationally acclaimed Italian jazz musician, and you can spot how he is a combination of cultures by the way he disses his homeland with the soulful passion of a born improviser. Genoa, where the trumpet player presently lives--he calls himself a “professional mover"--is “filthy and boring." Romano Prodi's coalition leftist Italian government is “even worse than Berlusconi's." You can also spot it in his hopeless-hipster shrug: “Everything is in extremes here, the ...

Ornette Coleman Wins Four Jazz Awards

Source: All About Jazz

NEW YORK - Ornette Coleman, who earlier this year became only the second jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for music, swept the top honors at the Jazz Awards 2007 last week, winning in four categories, including musician of the year. Coleman's Sound Grammar, the first purely improvised live recording to win the Pulitzer, was chosen album of the year in balloting among more than 400 members of the Jazz Journalists Association. The 77-year-old Coleman's unorthodox “Sound Grammar" quartet ...

Bill Barber, 87; Jazz Tuba Player

Bill Barber, 87; Jazz Tuba Player

Source: All About Jazz

Bill Barber, a musician who helped refashion the jazz tuba from its predictable oompah passages to suit the complex melodies and rhythms of Miles Davis and other postwar jazz modernists, died of congestive heart failure June 18 at his home in Bronxville, N.Y. He was 87. A fixture of many early jazz bands, the tuba was largely reduced to a jazz relic by the early 1930s as sound technology improved. The upright bass took the place of the booming brass ...

AllAboutJazz-New York July 2007 Issue Now Available

Source: All About Jazz

It's hot. You're tired. Vision and JVC wore you out last month. The air conditioning seems particularly nice right now. And what's that you say? There's nothing going on in July, that's why the kids are in camp and everyone else is in the Hamptons. Please.

The only difference that comes with the seasons in New York is that for a few months a year, people only wear a little black (absorption versus reflection, you know). Besides that, musicians keep ...
