The only difference that comes with the seasons in New York is that for a few months a year, people only wear a little black (absorption versus reflection, you know). Besides that, musicians keep playing, clubs keep booking, CDs keep appearing. Who are you to lounge on the couch in the face of all this activity?
No one, that's who. Check out Cachao (On the Cover) this month, possibly Cuba's most famous musician for his run at Blue Note. Stop by to see Mingus alum Charles McPherson (Interview) at Dizzy's. Listen intently to Satoko Fujii (Artist Feature) at The Stone.
And July, of course, means Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y, so appropriately you can read all about the East Side venue and then head out to see the likes of Phil Woods, James Moody and Eddie Palmieri. And check out this month's Megaphone, written from the perspective of Benjamin Franklin in celebration of the 4th of July.
Couldn't afford a vacation this year? Our festival reporters do the travelling for you, without the lost luggage. New Orleans is back in full swing; Melbourne shows Down Under up over and Victo keeps being Victo.
Our CD review section is a little shorter this month but not for lack of choices. Every CD is worth a listen and maps nicely to our packed-as-usual Event Calendar. The length is so that the paper can fit in the back pocket of those shorts you just bought for the hot sticky weather.
Turn off the air conditioning, apply some sunscreen, check the UV rating on your sunglasses. The festivals may have left, but jazz isn't going anywhere. But you should.
We'll see you out there...
