Eri Yamamoto Finds the Keys to the City

Manhattan's landscape can change in a flash, yet even near the busiest thoroughfares, a half-forgotten pocket exists where time stands still and only the escalating beer prices alert a patron to the approximate decade. Straddle a barstool inside the musty, West Village cocoon that is Arthur's Tavern and marvel. Balloons dangle from the ceiling, slowly deflating, their candy-shop hues faded with the years. The tobacco-brown wall paneling is dotted with ratty decorations that celebrate every occasion: Cupid silhouettes for Valentine's ...

Jack Bradley was only 15 when he first heard Louis Armstrong on a 78-r.p.m. record in his family’s living room, an ordinary introduction to a man who would end up having a profound influence on Mr. Bradley’s life. “I never heard anything like that before,” said Mr. Bradley, who is now 74 and lives in this seaside town on Cape Cod. Mr. Bradley met Armstrong in the early 1950s, after a mesmerizing performance at the American Legion Hall in nearby ...

Remembering Miles Davis

HE LEFT US 17 YEARS AGO TODAY
While Miles Davis may be buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, his spirit and inspiration live on lustily and powerfully in the massive catalog he left behind. Few artists will ever leave as large or enduring a footprint on their craft as Davis. When he passed away on September 28, 1991 it was a blow to music. Even if past the ferocious, even ridiculous creative heights he'd shown from the 1940s through ...

However, the bill, as passed, does create an Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator that will serve within the Office of the President. The bill now moves to the ...

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
I know, I know; Doug's Picks is overdue for new entries. They'll be coming along, but the Rifftides staff is engaged in a number of projects, including preparation of a reading from Poodie James, with strings. More about that later. Among other things, I'm writing the notes for a forthcoming CD co-led by Charlie Shoemake and Terry Trotter. It is a delight. I'm not at liberty to tell you about it except to say that its title is Inside and the music, ...
