Eddie Duran: Jazz Guitarist
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Guitarist Eddie Duran was best known as a member of vibraphonist Cal Tjader's groups from 1954 forward and in pianist Vince Guaraldi's ensembles from 1962 onward. What all three musicians had in common was a San Francisco upbringing and marvelous musical taste. Unlike Tjader, Guaraldi and Dave Brubeck, another Bay Area native, Duran preferred to work as a sideman. A licensed barber, he also liked to stick around the Bay Area, accompanying many jazz artists who passed through the city. ...

New Derek Menchan Album Is Incredibly Diverse
Source:
Christine King
Derek Menchan is one of the most well-rounded musical talents I’ve had the opportunity to come across in recent times. His output is incredibly diverse, and every single time I get to listen to one of his songs, I am always pleasantly surprised at the fact that I never really know what to expect. Derek is the kind of artist who never settles into his comfort zone, and this new release is a really good taste of what I am ...

Scott Thompson Public Relations
Following the success of his previous live, two track recording, Blues & Hues, San Francisco pianist Clifford Lamb again teams up with producer Jeff Weber to pursue their concept of the jazz “mashup”—the process in which a Lamb composition is stirred into an existing jazz work to offer a new perspective on history and culture. This time, they took their show on the road —despite COVID-19 restrictions—to record in New Orleans, the storied birthplace of jazz, whose gritty majesty and ...

Clifford Jordan: Royal Ballads
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan is probably best known for the eight live and studio recordings he made in 1964 with the sextet led by bassist Charles Mingus. But there was much more to Jordan. A prolific recording artist, Jordan had a big, round sound from the start in March 1957, when his Blowing in From Chicago album was released on Blue Note. Jordan played as a sideman on the albums of several dozen jazz greats and recorded more than 35 ...

'The Trio, Vol. 1' Is The Unique And Captivating New Release By Pianist/Composer Dave Bass
Source:
Scott Thompson Public Relations
Pianist Dave Bass says, On my first three CD's I was lucky to have jazz greats like Phil Woods, Ted Nash, Ernie Watts}} and Ignacio Berroa record my instrumental compositions and stunning stylists like Mary Stallings and Karrin Allyson record my lyrics. Now, however, it's time to enter the demanding and revealing world of the piano trio. In addition to five new originals (which include my love affair with the Afro-Cuban tradition), I've chosen music associated with, or composed by, ...

Mike Neer: Keepin' It Real
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
When I last posted on Mike Neer in 2016, he had just released an album called Steelonious, a tribute album to Thelonious Monk performed on the lap steel guitar. What wouldn't seem like a good fit turned out to be a happy marriage. Monk interpreted by Mike on a lap steel guitar gave the music enormous energy and edge. Mike is now back with his steel guitar, only this time his instrument has a Hawaiian punch and a superb collection ...
