Poncho Sanchez: Trane's Delight

Poncho Sanchez: Trane's Delight

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Like many Latin legends—including Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Carlos “Patato" Valdés, Ray Barretto, Candido, Carlos Vidal and others—Poncho Sanchez is a percussionist. Born in Laredo, Texas, Sanchez has been a leading conga player and bandleader for decades. His big break came in 1975, when vibraphonist Cal Tjader hired him for his band. Before he died in 1982, Tjader urged Concord Records to sign Sanchez. The label took Tjader's advice, and Sanchez has recorded 27 albums for Concord over the past ...

The Beatles: Abbey Road

The Beatles: Abbey Road

Abbey Road was the last Beatles album on which all four members recorded together. By the time they gathered to work on their 11th studio album at the Abbey Road Studios between February and August 1969, they had done it all, seen it all and owned virtually everything they ever wanted. In fact, they had become so famous they were detached from the culture they helped start back in '64. Giving up touring in 1966 to become studio cobblers, the ...

Jimmy Heath: Holland, 2012

Jimmy Heath: Holland, 2012

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

A mysterious CD arrived a couple of weeks ago from a reader. The album's title is The Voice of the Saxophone, featuring the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw of the Netherlands, conducted by Henk Meutgeert and featuring solos by tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath. That's all the information that came with the CD, and the sender said that's about all he knows about it. So I had to roll up my sleeves and look around, since the album isn't listed even ...

Doc: The Jazz Baroness

Doc: The Jazz Baroness

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

If Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter hadn't moved to New York in 1951, we'd probably have far fewer recordings by Thelonious Monk. Nica, as she was known, was a member of the wealthy Rothschild family, and her decision to relocate to Manhattan came after separating from her husband. She left her five children behind and took a suite at 995 Fifth Avenue. Soon, she began frequenting jazz clubs, where she had a deep and inquisitive respect for the art of bebop ...
