Galactic Tide’s The Haas Company Vol. 1 is one of the most powerful rock/fusion albums of recent times. The set of Pete Drungle compositions showcases the inventive guitarist Andy Timmons, with a special appearance by the late trumpeter Wallace Roney. Steve Haas and Pete Drungle formed a close artistic relationship during the many hours they spent working together in Mr. Haas’ studio writing these tunes and hashing out the marvelous, lush and intricate arrangements you hear on these recordings. Working together at the best recording studios with the finest recording and mastering engineers in the industry ensured that their vision for this project materialized.
With drummer Steve Haas propelling the performances and keyboardist Pete Drungle contributing the music, Timmons plays with relentless passion.
Joined by Haas, Drungle, Kirwan Brown or Al MacDowell on bass, and saxophonist Pete Gallio, the guitarist is heard at the peak of his powers and his freest.
“Leather Pajamas,” an explosive piece with dense ensembles and hard-edged no-nonsense rock/fusion, sets the standard for what is to follow. The lengthy “1979” unfolds like a suite, beginning with a gentle rhythmic pattern in 6/4 time that segues into a wailing guitar solo, a different rhythmic pattern, spots for keyboards and bass, and some pretty wild playing overall. “Good Lieutenant” is a bit slower in tempo but no less passionate.
“Stockholm Syndrome” is an exotic scalar piece that gets a bit funky. Guest percussionist Mauro Refosco is prominent and there are two special spots for the late great trumpeter Wallace Roney who fits quite comfortably in the setting. Other selections include the lyrical “Ballad For Andy,” the free and ferocious “Magic Log,” a relatively melodic “Galactic Tide,” a forceful strut (“Tower Of Babel”), and the wailing closer “Arrow Of Time.’
Steve Haas has long had a passion for progressive rock and fusion. As the leader of The Haas Company, he has collaborated with such greats as violinist Jerry Goodman (of the Mahavishnu Orchestra), Sean Lennon, Frank Gambale, and John Patitucci on recording projects that will be released in the near future.
Andy Timmons has had a busy career full of major accomplishments. In addition to touring the world with Danger Danger, he was the musical director for Olivia Newton-John, worked with Simon Phillips, Kip Winger, Paula Abdul and Paul Stanley, and sold over a million records with an extensive discography that includes heated instrumentals, blues, and high quality pop tunes.
The Haas Company Vol. 1 is a must for fans of rock/fusion and the great Andy Timmons.
