Her cheerful original features the singer-songwriter joined by three of Los Angeles’ top jazz musicians.

Great Aunt Ruth (aka Kathryn Joy) and her Saucy Cats are set to release her newest single “On Ne Sait Jamais.” Building upon the success of her previous EP All About the Music in Your Heart, the singer debuts her new song with a top-notch trio comprised of trumpeter Nolan Shaheed, Greg Porée on guitar and ukulele, and bassist Trevor Ware.

“On Ne Sait Jamais” (which in English translates to “you just never know”, “you never can tell” or Fats Waller’s expression “one never knows”) is a joyful piece about seduction that features Great Aunt Ruth’s sweet fetching vocal in a swinging gypsy jazz setting. It was written as part of a musical that she is working on with arranger- producer Rahn Coleman. This version of the song was arranged for her by Nolan Shaheed. The playful and catchy song is being released in time for the Fête de la Musique (Music Day), an annual music celebration during which everyone is encouraged to play music outdoors. The June 21 event is observed in more than 700 cities in 120 countries.

Kathryn Joy, whose grandfather was a concert pianist and a music professor, and mother studied opera and sings sacred music, dates the start of her music career to when she met veteran pianist Joel Scott on a cruise ship. Scott saw the great potential in her singing and her songs, becoming her mentor. Together they formed Great Aunt Ruth and the Saucy Cats, recording four songs during 2013-15 before Scott tragically passed away. Ms. Joy completed the project which included a flamenco-inspired love story (“A Seed in the Wind”), a New Orleans jazz double-entendre piece (Pêche Meba”) and “Swing It Like Ella,” by composing “All About The Music” as a tribute to Scott, naming the EP All About the Music in Your Heart. Rahn Coleman (who became Kathryn Joy’s vocal coach) arranged and produced the album.

Having made it through the COVID Pandemic, Great Aunt Ruth and her Saucy Cats are ready to create new music and celebrate life. “On Ne Sait Jamais” is their latest musical adventure.
