Dionne Warwick." Dionne's voice is unmistakable—like a long wooden match being drawn slowly and seductively across a flint. We talked about childhood and growing up in East Orange, N.J. And yes, I asked whether she sings her Hal David/Burt Bacharach hits in the shower. The answer will surprise you.

This one came out in 1963. Turning Bernstein's high-tension score into a bossa nova must have been quite a trick. Not even Liberace or Percy Faith dared record an album devoted to the soundtrack. Next up for Bill Barron could have been Is Paris Burning Bossa Nova...
