Neighborhood Venues Host More Than 125 Performances Citywide.
The DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) is thrilled to announce the schedule for Jazz in the ‘Hoods Presented by Events DC. Jazz in the ‘Hoods is a vital component of the DC JazzFest (June 10-19) that spotlights the District as a vibrant cultural capital, and brings jazz to all four quadrants and eight Wards of the nation’s capital. Over 125 performances at more than 20 neighborhood venues will enthrall Washington, DC residents and visitors across the city.

“Jazz in the 'Hoods presented by Events DC is a great opportunity to bring world class music talent to all corners of the District." says Erik A. Moses, Events DC’s Senior Vice President and Managing Jazz in the ‘Hoods Presented by Events DC represents an exciting DC JazzFest partnership with local clubs, restaurants, hotels, museums, and more in celebration of jazz in our nation’s capital. This year, these partnerships have grown to include the National Park Service (with free concerts at five different Parks in celebration of their centennial) and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The schedule presents a mix of local and nationally recognized artists proudly representing, celebrating and expanding the genre. It has a tradition of attracting large, diverse audiences.

For a sixth consecutive year, the 2016 Jazz in the ‘Hoods will include the CapitalBop Jazz Loft Series, a partnership with CapitalBop, that presents young, genre-expanding musicians in alternative venues, as well as DC-based musicians grounded in the jazz tradition.

Returning for its fifth year, the EAST RIVER JAZZFest Series is a “festival within a festival” that presents free and affordably priced jazz performances and programs to thousands of residents east of the Anacostia River, in neighborhoods not often served by live jazz performances. The target audience is Ward 7 and 8 residents of all ages, backgrounds and income levels.

With a variety of free and ticketed performances in 20 neighborhoods, including Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, Chinatown, Downtown, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Capitol Riverfront, Mount Pleasant, Kenilworth and Eastland Gardens, the H Street Corridor, Southeast, Southwest, Takoma Park, the U Street Corridor and Van Ness, Jazz in the ‘Hoods annually attracts a vibrant audience of thousands of music enthusiasts.

The University of the District of Columbia is once again partnering with DCJF on music and education programs. The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage will host the ‘Dis is ‘da Drum Series, five free concerts highlighting a broad range of DC drummer/percussionist bandleaders, including a representation of the explosive Bahia, Brazil drum tradition. And, Transparent Productions, the DC area’s purveyor of cutting edge performances, will bring their unique, cutting edge flavor to the DC JazzFest.

In addition to CapitalBop's D.C. Jazz Loft Series, and the EAST RIVER JazzFEST Series, other venue partners include Twins Jazz, Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Mr. Henry's, Gallery on H, Rumba Café, BloomBars, and National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, among others.

“Jazz in the ‘Hoods is a classic manifestation of the DC JazzFest’s diverse, ‘big tent’ offerings, partnering with vibrant spaces and adventurous presenters around town to bring exciting artistry to our community,” said Willard Jenkins, the DCJF’s Artistic Director.

Jazz in the ‘Hoods showcases a virtual cornucopia of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists and numerous outstanding D.C.-based jazz groups.
