Dave Bass Quartet West shows versatility with upcoming house concert and concert hall performances
After the 2015 release of Dave BassNYC Sessions (Whaling City Sound), pianist and composer Dave Bass learned quickly how the venue influences the performance.

“When we played at a traditional jazz club like Kitano in NYC, we could bring vocalist Karrin Allyson plus a quartet and make a big sound. But smaller gigs at places like Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland led me to doing just a piano/sax duo—in that case with Greg Abate. It’s both challenging and exhilarating to be able to perform completely different arrangements of my tunes, featuring the special talents of my compatriots.”

Dave’s next two gigs demonstrate that variety, both with his new West Coast Quartet. On October 3rd, Dave performs his first house concert (since NYC Sessions’ release) in Fair Oaks, CA. In an intimate outdoor environment, the audience hears every note and nuance. Special guest, Carlos Caro—Cuban Conguero Especial will join Dave and his quartet for this unique gig.

Just a week later, on October 9th, Dave and his West Coast Quartet take the stage at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, CA. This concert hall performance demands music on a grander scale, and thus Dave will be performing on a 6’ 2” Model A Steinway Grand. At both gigs, Dave will be performing new arrangements of tracks from NYC Sessions plus his arrangements of classics from Chick Corea, Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, and Wayne Shorter.

Dave has received universally rave reviews for NYC Sessions: DownBeat’s four star review proclaimed that NYC Sessions “proves deeply satisfying in part because it does so many things so well due to Bass' savvy as an arranger, his top-notch crew, and his own sparkling keyboard work.” Jazz Inside concluded that Bass “writes and plays in a style that is easily identifiable and relatable, yet sophisticated and operates on a very high level. Dave Bass is back doing what he was born to and, in doing so, is keeping the torch burning for elegant songwriting and classic bebop in the process.” Raul Da Gama, of Latin Jazz Network: “Not only is Mr. Bass in fine form, he also contributes wonderful charts to the proceedings. And the music in all its diversity and passion appears to have an unstoppable momentum under his leadership. This is a highly entertaining and gripping recording, crisply executed by the ensemble... and has an energy, drive and polish entirely apt for the compelling admixture of Mr. Bass’ expressive musical language.”

The Dave Bass Quartet West consists of Darius Babazadeh (tenor/flute), Kerry Kashiwagi (upright bass), Colin Douglas (drums at Fair Oaks), and Brian Kendrick (drums at CJC).
