THE LONGEST RUNNING LATIN JAZZ GIG IN THE CITY'S HISTORY!

CHRIS WASHBURNE AND THE SYOTOS BAND CELEBRATING THEIR 18TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR PERFORMING WEEKLY IN NEW YORK CITY!

SYOTOS, was founded 19 years ago and has become what TimeOUT New York calls a “Latin Jazz institution." They have appeared weekly, first at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and now at Smoke for the last 18 years. Come and celebrate at Smoke (106th and Broadway), where they play every Sunday night. (Sets at 8PM, 10PM, and 11:30PM). 11:30PM set features a Latin jazz jam session with guest soloists.

SYOTOS pushes the genre of Latin Jazz into uncharted waters resounding a postmodern mix that embraces dissonance, weaving contemporary uptempo beats with a hard driving sound. This boundary breaking band embodies Latin jazz with a global reach, combining Afro-Cuban, funk, jazz, and gospel music. Some of the band's members are alumni from the Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri bands and they continue in those leader's footsteps, pushing the genre into the 21st century. Their release “Paradise In Trouble" (Jazzheads Records) was nominated as the best Latin jazz record of 2004 by the Jazz Journalists Association. Their release “The Land of Nod" (Jazzheads Records) was voted one of the top ten releases of 2007 by Brad Walseth of JazzChicago.net.

Nate Chinen of the New York Times writes; “The trombonist Chris Washburne leads this working band in its weekly engagement, bringing erudition as well as fire to the modern conventions of Latin jazz"

Chris Washburne has toured extensively with various groups and concertized throughout the Europe, North, South, and Central Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. He has commissioned and premiered over twenty contemporary compositions for trombone and has performed on over 150 recordings. He has been hailed as “One of the best trombonists in salsa..." by Peter Watrous of The New York Times and “one of the most intelligent and interesting thinkers in modern music, as well as being perhaps the most important trombonist performing today" by Brad Walseth of www.jazzchicago.net. He was voted as a “Rising Star of the Trombone" in the 56th (2008) and the 57th (2009) annual Downbeat Critics Poll.

“Chris Washburne the trombonist, leading his SYOTOS band, has an evocative, at times almost dreamily inventive album in Nuyorican Nights (Jazzheads), which mines the Latin context for a lyricism that can be heard in the writing and his own burnished solos." - --Gary Giddins, The Village Voice

“Chris Washburne is a young talent most deserving wider recognition." --Howard Mandel, jazz critic for Downbeat and Village Voice.

“Most impressive is trombonist Washburne's unostentatious use of the full range of his horn: he simply conjures the colors he needs, without undue bluster." --Richard Walls, The Boston Phoenix

“Washburne has emerged as perhaps my favorite trombone player of recent years and he doesn't disappoint in this performance. His lines, while always inventive and technically superb, add to the music in the very best sense and his powerful solos never fail to delight." --Brad Walseth, jazzchicago.net
