Brownie Speaks: A Video Documentary will be presented at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival on Sunday, June 4 beginning at 3 PM. The 90 minute screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Don Glanden. The event will take place at: The BCA Center, 135 Church Street, Burlington, VT. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Wilmington, Delaware, jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown made an outstanding and influential contribution to music. In an era when many musicians were emulating Charlie Parker's drug abuse, Brown inspired others to achieve greatness while living a clean lifestyle. Ironically, he was killed in a car accident at the age of 25.

Brownie Speaks is the culmination of years of research by Wilmington-born jazz pianist Don Glanden, research that has included interviews with Brown's friends, family, contemporaries, and admirers. Glanden's son Brad edited Brownie Speaks using these interviews, along with archival materials and newly shot video footage. The resulting feature-length documentary presents a richly detailed account of Brown's life, and examines his historical importance in the context of three criteria—innovation, influence, and individuality.

Past screenings of Brownie Speaks have included: Jazz Night in Southwest/Washington, DC; Thelonious Monk Institute/Los Angeles, CA; Newport 2015 Pre-Festival Event/Newport, RI; International Jazz Day 2015/Paris, France; San Jose Summer Fest 2016/San Jose, CA; Monterey Jazz Festival 2016/Monterey, CA.

The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival runs from June 2-11 and will include: Terence Blanchard, Diana Krall, Jane Bunnett, Trombone Shorty, Kamasi Washington, Peter Brötzmann and many others. Check out the full line up at discoverjazz.com.
