THE OASIS PROJECT AND ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM HOSTS JOHN JORGENSON FOR INAUGURAL CONCERT EVENT

The Legendary Musician and Composer Will Record Original Work Inspired by Museum, as well as a Live Performance DVD from the Warden Oasis Theater

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oasis Project, a performing arts program of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum made possible by the Bert W. Martin Foundation, will host legendary musician and composer John Jorgenson with his celebrated quintet for a two-night concert event on April 12 and 13 at the museum’s Warden Oasis Theater.

Jorgenson, long considered the preeminent ambassador of Gypsy Jazz, visited the museum in January 2013 and created a new song celebrating this Oasis Project collaboration. He will perform this song at his two-night appearance and both shows will be recorded for a DVD project whose proceeds will go in part to the Desert Museum. These broadcasts from the theater and their resulting recorded content will introduce a new interactive concert experience live from the Desert Museum’s Warden Oasis Theater.

“The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is honored to have John Jorgenson and his quintet perform the inaugural concert for The Oasis Project," said Craig Ivanyi, Desert Museum Executive Director. “These shows are the beginning of an innovative new program and we could not be more thrilled to have Mr. Jorgenson here as we embark on this journey."

The Oasis Project concerts will be highlighted with interactive experiences designed to uncover the creative process and build a meaningful connection between participants and the legendary guitarist and composer. Workshops, a master class, question and answer session and more will be open to attendees.

Local artists will also have the chance to be involved in the event as they create original works inspired by Jorgenson’s compositions. Chosen through a contest presented by The Art Institute at the Desert Museum, these works will be featured in the show’s set design, bringing the intimate 300-seat theater to life.

To enter the contest, participants will be asked to listen to one of Jorgenson’s compositions and create an original work inspired by the music piece. One grand prize winner will have the chance to get his or her original piece featured as the cover of the concert DVD. Prizes and a gallery showing for select works will be offered.

By partnering together, The Oasis Project and Jorgenson are creating an innovative marketing model for the new era - a sustainable relationship with full-circle benefits for both artists and nonprofit organizations.

John Jorgenson, long considered the preeminent ambassador of Gypsy Jazz, is a three-time Academy of Country Music guitarist of the year. He has collaborated with acts such as Elton John, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt and more. The John Jorgenson Quintet features Jorgenson (lead guitar), Jason Anick (jazz violinist), Doug Martin (rhythm guitar), Simon Planting (bass) and Rick Reed (percussion). The quintet will release a new album later in spring 2013 and it will be a companion to the DVD created by the Oasis Project.

The Oasis Project is an innovative program, made possible by the Bert. W. Martin Foundation, designed for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to develop sustaining relationships between the museum and creative artists that connect new audiences to the Museum's conservation mission in novel ways. These relationships lay the foundation for a new, fully-integrated marketing model - creating content and events that connect and engage communities both on- and off-line.
