39th Festival International de Jazz de Montréal: Indoor program

As the 39th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal approaches, the entire city gets ready to plunge back into summer... And not just any old summer: a season of music in the street, major festive, friendly gatherings in the heart of downtown Montréal, wonderful discoveries and essential rendezvous! In other words, Summer the way only Montréal can do it! The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, presented by TD Bank Group in collaboration with Rio Tinto, is once again delighted this year to fill our vibrant downtown core with 150 concerts, where living legends share space with the finest young rising talents, where musicians from all over the world cross paths and talents, where the soul of jazz breaks free at the crossroads of genres and influences, proving now more than ever that the music is vividly alive at the heart of a scene bursting with creativity. The eternal watchword here? Quality! From June 28 to July 7, 2018, the only problem for fans from here, there and everywhere, thirsty for music and new discoveries, is choosing from a crazy range of possibilities. Tickets for these concerts go on sale Friday, April 27 at noon (exclusive presale for newsletter subscribers from Wednesday, April 25 at 10 a.m. to Thursday, April 26 at 10 p.m.).

From rock to jazz, R&B, electronica and neoclassical, the biggest musical names from the world over converge on the Événements spéciaux TD series at 7:30 p.m.
  • June 28 / Seal. Opening act: Rennie Adams — The British superstar takes a most successful plunge into jazz with his latest album Standards.
  • June 29 / Jann Arden — Wonderful pop-rock singer Jann Arden brings us songs from her latest brill offering These Are the Days.
  • June 30 / Dreamworks Animation in Concert — An evening to delight children of all ages, with the legendary soundtracks to Dreamworks animated films, performed by the Orchestre Métropolitain and accompanied by projections. Presented in collaboration with Radio-classique.
  • July 1 / George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Rock Party Tour 2018 — A powerhouse high-energy evening of unleashed rock’n’roll with icons George Thorogood and the Destroyers.
  • July 2 / Herbie Hancock | Thundercat — A living legend and a young lion cross paths for one unique soiree.
  • July 3 / Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite. Opening act: Delgres — Four years after dazzling fans with their excellent duo blues project, these two pals return with a second shared release, No Mercy in this Land.
  • July 4 / Ludovico Einaudi, Essential Einaudi — After a sellout concert in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier last autumn, the neoclassical star brings a more rock-oriented version of his repertoire to the Centre Bell. Presented in collaboration with evenko.
  • July 5 / Bonobo | St Germain — A double bill starring two artists who have left their indelible marks on electronica.
  • July 7 / Ian Anderson presents: Jethro Tull, 50th Anniversary Tour — With 30+ albums and thousands of concerts to their credit, the illustrious UK group makes its debut Festival visit. Presented in collaboration with CHOM.

The Grands concerts Rio Tinto series welcomes an exceptional array of distinguished musical guests every evening at 8 p.m.
  • June 28 / Cécile McLorin Salvant with the Aaron Diehl Trio. Opening act: Christian Sands — Peerless singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, accompanied by brilliant pianist Aaron Diehl: two extraordinary talents join forces for a magisterial jazz evening. CBC/Radio-Canada Opening Concert.
  • June 29 / Ry Cooder. Opening act: Joachim Cooder — The first Festival visit by the legendary Ry Cooder, ranked among the 10 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone. A Jazzfest event!
  • June 30 / Dee Dee Bridgewater & The Memphis Soulphony, Memphis Yes I’m Ready… Opening act: Davina and The Vagabonds — The jazz diva unveils a revolutionary reinterpretation of American R&B classics.
  • July 1 / Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Opening act: Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio — Eight years after their last Festival show, the banjo virtuoso and his Flecktones make their eagerly awaited return.
  • July 2 / Boz Scaggs, Out of the Blues Tour — The icon behind the timeless Silk Degrees visits the Festival for a third time, armed with his new album.
  • July 5 / BEYRIES | Alela Diane — It’s a 100% female program and a major Festival premiere for these two artists.
  • July 6 / Leslie Odom, Jr. | Jill Barber — Two singers, two musical words, a program devoted to the artistry of the jazz voice: the impressive Leslie Odom, Jr., a star in the musical Hamilton, and the luminous Jill Barber with fresh new songs.
  • July 7 / Beth Hart — One of the most engaging voices in modern blues-rock, American Beth Hart presents her newest album, Black Coffee.

The top-flight guest list rolls on with the Festival à la Maison symphonique Delta Air Lines series at 7 p.m.

  • June 29 / Ólafur Arnalds | Jean-Michel Blais — It’s a double bill devoted to spellbinding delicacy with dazzling Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds and Québécois pianist Jean-Michel Blais.
  • June 30 / Archie Shepp Quartet. Opening act: Wray Downes — Almost 20 years after his last visit, Archie Shepp returns to re-envelope us in his voluptuous, sensual jazz sound.
  • July 2 / Chris Botti — Ranking among the world’s true jazz-pop greats, the star trumpeter returns to delight his vast audience.
  • July 3 / Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Opening act: Ala.Ni — A timeless rendezvous with the legendarily ageless Preservation Hall Jazz Band, proud standard-bearers of the purest jazz tradition.
  • July 4 / Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain & Chris Potter Trio | Renee Rosnes — Three virtuoso improvisers assemble for an evening of Indian-inflected jazz, preceded by talented pianist Renee Rosnes and her new one, Beloved of the Sky.
  • July 5 / Holly Cole — One of Canada’s greatest jazz singers returns with her newest, simply and aptly entitled HOLLY, along with classics from the jazz songbook.
  • July 7 / Bobby McFerrin, circlesongs — The master of a capella enthralls us once again, marking the 20th anniversary of the landmark album circlesongs. CBC/Radio-Canada Closing Concert.

Feel the need to cut a rug? Groove into the Rythmes series at 8:30 p.m.
  • June 26 and 27 / Charlotte Gainsbourg — In her first visit to the Festival, the darling of the French audience presents her new release, Rest: nothing short of a “perfect” album, according to Les Inrocks.
  • June 28 / Snarky Puppy. Opening act: Tunnel — Instrumental fusion group Snarky Puppy return with their latest, Culcha Vulcha (Grammy winner for Besam jolyst Contemporary Instrumental Album).
  • June 29 / Metronomy. Opening act: Duchess Says — Renowned for firing up the dancefloor with their refreshing pop and undeniable rhythms, this British quartet makes its first visit to the Festival.
  • June 30 / Kamasi Washington. Opening act: Anomalie — Likewise, it’s a Festival debut for the brilliant Kamasi Washington, absolute sensation of the global jazz scene.
  • July 1 / Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles | Lean on Me: José James Celebrates Bill Withers — A supremely groovy double bill with urban jazz inflected with hip-hop, blues and gospel from Cory Henry and his Funk Apostles, and José James paying tribute to the repertoire of the great Bill Withers.
  • July 2 (sold out) and July 3 / Daniel Caesar — Powered by his gospel-infused R&B-soul sound, the Toronto singer lands in MTELUS with his debut album, Freudian.
  • July 4 / St. Paul and The Broken Bones. Opening act: Con Brio — Leaders of the neo-soul-funk scene, St. Paul and the Broken Bones roll in with their incredibly rhythmic, groovy set.

  • June 29 / Trevor Hall. Opening acts: Jake Clemons — Standing at the confluence of roots, reggae and folk, and influenced by his spiritual pursuits, the singer introduces us to The Fruitful Darkness, his latest album.
  • June 30 / CMDWN | Nate Husser | Zach Zoya | Naya Ali — Looking for a Made in Canada hip-hop soiree powered by fiery beats? Right this way!
  • July 1 / GoGo Penguin, A Humdrum Star Live | Moon Hooch — It’s jazz that rattles the cage and bursts free from the box: Manchester trio GoGo Penguin with their unique electroacoustic jazz, and Moon Hooch with their savage hybrid jazz.
  • July 3 / Moses Sumney — Unfurling the delicate, sensitive soul of his debut album, Aromanticism, American singer Moses Sumney plunges Club Soda into the quiet storm of his musical world.
  • July 5 / Møme — One of the true leaders of the new wave of French electronica!
  • July 6 / Kimbra — A major star in Oceania, this New Zealand singer arrives with a sound at the crossroads of pop, jazz and soul.
  • July 7 / Marinah (Ojos de Brujo) — An irresistible fusion of flamenco, rumba, hip-hop and an ocean of joie de vivre. Hot-hot-hot!

Théâtre du Nouveau Monde

History and passionate emotion join forces at 8 p.m. in the Nouveau Monde series.

June 26 to 30 (sold out), July 2 to 7 and July 10 to 14 / Robert Lepage, Ex Machina and Betty Bonifassi, SLĀV — Luxuriously visual, this landmark show transports us to the ancient origins of slave trade, from the segregation of African-Americans to their emancipation, to today’s mass incarceration and modern slavery.

  • July 2 / Carla Bley conducts the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal with special guest Steve Swallow — A definitive figure in post-bop jazz, Carla Bley takes the reins of the ONJ for a delicious foray into the jazz standards songbook.
  • July 3 / Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Opening act: SHPIK — Brian Blade returns with longtime musical companions The Fellowship Band and a new jazz album with accents from the southern U.S.: Body and Shadow.
  • July 5 / Steve Kuhn, 80th anniversary | Vincent Peirani and Émile Parisien — Modern jazz pioneer Steve Kuhn stops by the Festival to celebrate the 80th birthday of an illustrious musical life. The curtain rises on stunning French duo Vincent Peirani (accordion) and Émile Parisien (soprano saxophone).
  • July 6 / Melanie De Biasio. Opening act: Alexandra Stréliski — Considered the next big thing in jazz since her debut, the Belgian singer unveils songs from her latest, Lilies, a rock-accented jazz set worthy of the greats.
  • July 7 / Soft Machine — Pioneers of the ’60s psychedelia wave, iconic British jazz-rock fusion group Soft Machine hits the Festival as part of their world tour.

  • June 28 / Laurent de Wilde, New Monk Trio — Laurent de Wilde presents a deeply personal, original re-reading of the landmark work of genius pianist and composer Thelonious Monk.
  • June 29 / Mélissa Laveaux, Radyo Siwèl — The singer pays tribute to her Haitian roots with traditional Creole folk songs adapted with grace and sensitivity.
  • June 30 / Lucioles, The Dark Side of the Moon — A major project by virtuoso pianist Guillaume Martineau: eight musicians reinterpret the iconic Pink Floyd masterwork.
  • July 1 / Jesse Mac Cormack, Is Stevie Ray Vaughan — High-profile Montréal guitar prodigy Jesse Mac Cormack takes on yet another six-string legend: Stevie Ray Vaughan.

  • June 30 / William Prince — Solo with his guitar, the Peguis First Nations artist sends us soaring with his deep baritone voice and his tender folk melodies.
  • July 1 / Vinícius Cantuária — Singer/multi-instrumentalist Vinícius Cantuária elegantly navigates from bossa nova to jazz.
  • July 2 / Sons of Kemet — An unusual format (saxophone, tuba and two drummers) delivers a feverish music that shakes up jazz, punk, AfroFuturism, electronica and jubilant free jazz.
  • July 3 / Kellylee Evans — Working in the purest pop and soul tradition, the singer treats us to the utterly original sounds of her latest album, Come On.
  • July 4 / Bombino — Renowned for his fantastic desert blues-rock, fusing traditional Berber rhythms and rock’n’roll energy, Bombino unveils his latest, Azel.
  • July 5 / Cameron Graves — A rising star of progressive jazz, the American pianist lands here with Planetary Prince (2017), a confluence of jazz, classical, rock, funk and hip-hop.
  • July 6 / Lido Pimienta — A musical militant, the singer electrifies audiences with her multicultural music and raw energy.
  • July 7 / Finley Quaye — Renowned for his reggae-pop hits, the Scottish singer makes his triumphant return to the stage, and his Festival debut.

A series nestled in the intimate confines of M2: Concerts intimes at 7 p.m.
  • June 28 and 29 / Wilsen — Ethereal pop-folk, as delicate as the first rays of the morning sun.
  • June 30 and July 1 / Chances — Offshoot of a parallel project by Geneviève Toupin, Chloé Lacasse and Vincent Carré, this Montréal trio blends indie pop and electronica with a touch of world music.
  • July 2 / Jackson MacIntosh — With his solo project My Dark Side, the singer unveils the more shadowy side of his intoxicating melodies.
  • July 3 / Julie Doiron — It’s a major Festival premiere for an artist who’s spent 30 years performing all over the world. For this special occasion, she’ll dig deep into her vast repertoire.
  • July 4 and 5 / Dominique Fils-Aimé — Semi-finalist on La Voix in 2015, Dominique Fils-Aimé presents her debut album, Nameless, at the crossroads of Africa and America, between the birth of the blues and vocal jazz.
  • July 6 and 7 / Raveen — The latest project from prolific adoptive Montrealer Eric Seguin, Raveen delivered the delicate 2017 album Always: a dreamy ambience in a melancholy, melodic world.

Bateau-Mouche, Old Port of Montréal

A magical thoroughly musical voyage: Croisière jazz (Jazz Cruise) boards at 6:30 p.m., returning at 10:30 p.m.

The Festival on the small screen

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is pleased to announce that, through its partnership with MEZZO LIVE HD, several concerts will be filmed and broadcast live. Viewers and music lovers from all over the world will be able to see the live performance of renowned banjo player Belá Fleck on Sunday, July 1. A world standard in classical music, jazz and dance, MEZZO LIVE HD is celebrating its 22nd anniversary as a force on the European scene, as well as its third year operating in Canada. Thanks to partnerships with some of the world’s major musical institutions, including the Salzburg Festispiele, the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, Jazz in Marciac, the Vienna Opera and of course, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, MEZZO LIVE HD presents global audiences with some of the world’s finest concerts.

The 39th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal will be held from June 28 to July 7, 2018.
