Pedro Ivo Ferreira

Born in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Pedro Ivo Ferreira is a double bassist and composer active in the European jazz and improvised music scene. His musical journey began at age 15 in his hometown’s local bands, before moving to São Paulo to study with Brazilian bass legend Sizão Machado. In 2012, he relocated to France to continue his studies at the CRR de Paris, earning his DEM diploma, and later moved to Amsterdam where he completed his Bachelor’s at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He studied with renowned bassists including John Clayton, Marc Buronfosse and Frans van der Hoeven.

Based in the Netherlands since 2014, Pedro has been involved in numerous projects across Europe, including Orè, Cacha Mundinho, Federico Calcagno Octet, Maripepa Contreras Ensemble, Zwerger/Ferreira/Jaspers, and Good Golden Frogs. As a co-founder and composer of Canvas Trio, he released two albums: Common Ground (2015) and Transitions (2017). In 2019, he recorded Noneto Desconcertante, a project featuring his compositions and arrangements for a nine-piece ensemble.

His current focus is Orè, a quartet blending Brazilian roots, contemporary composition, and free improvisation. The group released an EP in 2021, followed by a live album in Portugal (2023). Their third album Matter Antimatter is set for release in 2025.

Pedro is also a core member of the Nefertiti Quartet, with whom he recorded four albums and toured extensively across Europe. The group was selected for Jazz Migration #5 and won the 2019 Euroradio Jazz Competition in Copenhagen.

Read "Mundus Inversus" reviewed by Neri Pollastri
