Cleve's early training included an introduction to European Classical (bel canto singing and Opera); but throughout high school Cleve integrated his vocal training with guitar and folk singing appearing regularly in restaurants, hotels and coffee shops.

During his advanced studies, Cleve performed for ten years working a vigorous five-shows-a-day schedule which gave him an intense training in live musical theatre exploring many different styles and periods of American music. Along with his fellow singer/dancers, Cleve appeared on nationally televised music specials sponsored by TIMEX and VIACOM with such stars as Melba Moore, Wayne Newton, Carol Lawrence, Petula Clark, Dolly Parton, The Carpenters, Ray Charles, to name a few.
