Introduced ten years ago to a Lincoln Center audience by Mr. Mercer Ellington [1919-1996] as “…The premiere vocal interpreter of Duke Ellington’s music”, Cleve Douglass gained the praise of Cadence Magazine, which states that Cleve has “vocal flexibility… an outstanding jazz singer” for his vocal performance on his Duke Ellington Boulevard compact disc (Namaskar Records) which contains first-time recordings of three Duke tunes.
Splitting the weeks with Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross and following Incognito and The Platters at the world famous BLUE NOTE in Japan for a one month engagement, and then returning to the Blue Note for yet another month of sold-out shows in December, Cleve has built a considerable following in Japan as he continues working with some of New York’s best jazz musicians in venues such as Birdland and Iridium.
Just returning from his sixteenth successful tour in Japan that included a stint at Mr. Kelly’s in Osaka, Cleve has applied his vocal improvisational style to the tunes of some of the world’s more popular writers such as Bob Marley and the Beatles with arrangements of hip-hop and R&B in an attempt at keeping jazz current with the beats of today.
Cleve has been recognized by the New York nightclub community with nominations for Best Male Jazz Vocalist and his one-man shows have been produced regionally by the American Music Theatre Festival.
Cleve can be heard on a number of recordings as both soloist and in duets with other singers; he has appeared on TV in musical commercials and he is the subject of a nationally broadcast documentary along with his band in Japan.
His voice has been likened by many critics as “Nat King Cole reincarnate” when he is singing in the traditional style although his horn-like vocal interpretations give him an original sound to all music he performs. And he has toured with musicians from Asia, Africa, and Indonesia allowing for a very wide flow of musical expression and styles. Show less
