Laura J Marras
Born in Iglesias, Sardinia, Laura J Marras began studying the saxophone at the age of eight with the local S. Cecilia Wind Band of Fluminimaggiore, her hometown. After performing extensively as an alto saxophonist across the Cagliari area, she developed a deep passion for jazz and, in 2013, was admitted to the Jazz Department of the G.P. da Palestrina Conservatory in Cagliari, where she earned her degree in Jazz Saxophone with top honors. In 2018 she joined the Orchestra Jazz del Conservatorio di Cagliari (OJC) as lead alto, performing in theaters, jazz clubs, and festivals throughout Sardinia. Since 2023, she has been a member of the Sardica Orchestra, directed by drummer Paolo Nonnis (former leader of the Buddy Rich Orchestra on the U.S. West Coast in the 1980s). Alongside her work as a sideman, Marras has developed personal projects that explore tone, color, and melodic storytelling. Among them, a quartet dedicated to the music of Wayne Shorter, featuring Alessandro Di Liberto (piano), Alessandro Maiorino (double bass), and Enzo Zirilli (drums). In August 2023 she appeared as a special guest on the album Punti di Vista by pianist and arranger Alessandro Di Liberto, contributing her expressive alto saxophone voice to a musical journey inspired by the landscapes and atmosphere of Sardinia. Her debut album as a leader, Serenity: Laura J Marras plays Joe Henderson, pays tribute to the legendary saxophonist Joe Henderson. Featuring Francesca Corrias (vocals, flute & lyrics), Alessandro Di Liberto (piano and arrangements), Gabriele Loddo (electric bass), and Alessio Cogotti (drums), the album offers a contemporary reinterpretation of Henderson’s repertoire through a modern rhythmic and harmonic perspective, marked by a lyrical and deeply personal sound. In addition to her artistic career, Laura J Marras is devoted to music education, teaching saxophone and early music training, and encouraging young students to explore creativity and active listening through music.
