Gabriele Mitelli Three Tsuru Origami: Colapesce

by Mark Corroto
The second release from Gabriele Mitelli's Three Tsuru Origami ensemble shifts from the literal to the symbolic, expanding both in concept and personnel. Their debut, Three Tsuru Origami (We Insist!, 2022), was a meditation on birds and migration. This follow-up, Colapesce, draws inspiration from the 12th-century Sicilian legend of a half-man, half-fish who sacrifices himself to save his island. The tale, a fixture of Mediterranean folklore, resurfaced in pop culture through the 1964 film The Incredible Mr. Limpet, in which ...

In July 1967, The Beatles released the single All You Need Is Love," with Baby, You're a Rich Man" on the flip side. It's not that the quintet performing Wild Marks," the 33-minute track comprising the entirety of Altered Visions, is covering that Lennon-McCartney anthem. But the music presented here embodies the spirit of the idea that love is all you need. Altered Visions is the inaugural release from Lilailia Records, a label founded by three artists: saxophonists ...

by John Sharpe
Improvising with an instrument that can leave the tempered scale presents a considerable challenge to a pianist. However Angelica Sanchez aced the exam when she encountered tonally free-spirited Argentinean tenor saxophonist Camila Nebbia at Brooklyn's IBeam in November 2023. Consequently there is the feeling not only of ongoing conversation on the six tracks that make up In Another Land, Another Dream, but also negotiation and exploration to find the most appropriate rejoinder. That means seeking a sound that moves the ...

One might be tempted to say something like, introducing a new voice in jazz and improvised music: Camila Nebbia," except she has been quite a prolific artist for the past decade. Maybe her birthplace Buenos Aires kept the listening world's ears from recognizing this amazing talent. Her move to Berlin may rectify this error: that, and the release of two new discs on Relative Pitch Records. In Another Land, Another Dream (2024) finds the saxophonist in a duo with American ...

by Mike Jurkovic
Recorded in the same sessions and presented (digitally only) as the B-side to his first album--the fully careening Oxymoron (ears&eyes, 2021)--Brazilian trumpeter Joaquin Muro, with his high powered, firebrand peer, tenor saxophonist Camila Nebbia wailing bravely at his side, sets Contracara ablaze. The music is at its overheating core is a fiery, free jazz rave-up that gleefully and unerringly provides an undisputed respite from the relentless information of our long, recent days. Be the musicians structured as a ...

by Mike Jurkovic
Tutored by none other than Marilyn Crispell and Tim Berne, young pioneering saxophonist Camila Nebbia cannot be held totally responsible for her flexible idiosyncrasies. Surely both elders must have mentioned their ideas of musical reflexiveness somewhere in the laboratory. Sketchy, skittish, lean and peerless, Nebbia rarely takes the chance to sweeten the pot. Instead she likes to stir, season, burn and bake whenever and whatever the musical moment presents. And they occur as often and as spontaneously on ...

by John Chacona
No one knows what the landscape for live jazz will look like in the near future, but it is fair to assume that New York and London will continue as centers of gravity with Johannesburg making a strong challenge. Here is a long-shot bet: don't sleep on Buenos Aires. If your idea of Argentine jazz is limited to tango or Gato Barbieri, prepare to be startled at what Camila Nebbia and her nonet of young players are doing on Aura. ...
