Kevin Haynes / Grupo Elegua: Inner Outer Alignment Vol. 1
by Neil Duggan
Alto saxophonist, percussionist, composer and African folklore singer Kevin Haynes first came to prominence playing drums with the Jazz Warriors Big Band in the 1980s. An ordained Yoruba Ifá priest, his artistic development has continued to be shaped by the spiritual percussion traditions of West Africa, alongside his mastery of the alto saxophone, a proficiency that has often seen him referred to as the “African Charlie Parker." His Grupo Elegua project is a heady fusion of hard-bop jazz, ...

by Chris May
As half of the ferocious semi-free duo Binker and Moses with tenor saxophonist Binker Golding, and with a string of guesting and producing credits of biblical proportions, drummer Moses Boyd is among the most prominent of the cohort of London rebels who are reinvigorating British jazz. He emerged, alongside Golding, in singer Zara McFarlane's band in 2015, going on to produce her sublime jazz / reggae set Arise (Brownswood, 2017). Una convulsione di movimenti che procede verso una direzione evolutiva inarrestabile. Herbie Hancock parlerebbe di azione e reazione, come due possibilità da contemplare simultaneamente quando si gioca con la tastiera. Limitarsi ...

by Chris May
A cornerstone of London's underground jazz scene—as well as leading his own band he plays in Ezra Collective and groups led by the tenor saxophonists Binker Golding and Nubya Garcia—the keyboard player Joe Armon-Jones released his first own-name album, Starting Today (Brownswood), in spring 2018. A jewel of nu-fusion which owes almost as much to the Los Angeles R&B and funk scene as it does to British woke jazz, the album features Armon-Jones leading a lineup of fellow London luminaries ...
