Diaphane: München

Read "München" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The quartet Diaphane lives up to its name, creating music marked by an exquisite delicacy of form. Yet, their sound is as dynamic as it is subtle --quiet and loud, minimal and intense, ethereal and robust. Longtime collaborators in ensembles such as Natura Morta and the Frantz Loriot Systematic Distortion Orchestra, Italian percussionist Carlo Costa and French-Japanese violist Frantz Loriot founded this free improvisation group with Swiss pianist Raphael Loher and German tubist Carl Ludwig Hübsch. Together, they have toured ...

Daniel Studer: Extended II For Strings & Piano

Read "Extended II For Strings & Piano" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Hans Koch / Frantz Loriot / Jonas Kocher: Stranger Becoming

Read "Stranger Becoming" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The title says it all, Stranger Becoming. Not “becoming stranger," but Stranger Becoming as in unusual yet attractive or tasteful. That certainly is a perfect descriptor for the music generated by the trio of Hans Koch(clarinet), Frantz Loriot (viola), and Jonas Kocher (accordion). All three have a background in classical music which serves as the foundation for the sound of this session. From that cornerstone the trio delves into free improvisations on these six tracks. Their music is ...

Der Verboten: Der Verboten

Read "Der Verboten" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Violist Frantz Loriot and pianist Cedric Piromalli previously joined forces under the German moniker, Treffpunkt. And Der Verboten signifies the new lineup with the addition of saxophonist Antoine Chessex and drummer Christian Wolfarth for a fascinating album captured live at a French venue. And while the lone extended track “Der Dritte Treffpinky," is firmly situated in an experimental school of thought, the artists project cinematic inferences within a storyboard that contains an assortment of highly imaginative interweaving motifs.

New Release on Impressus Records! Ulysses, Frantz Loriot (Viola), Tonino Miano (Piano)

New Release on Impressus Records! Ulysses, Frantz Loriot (Viola), Tonino Miano (Piano)

Source: All About Jazz

Frantz Loriot and Tonino Miano met on MySpace not long ago and decided to have a session of improvised music. They immediately found an open channel of communication and understood that it needed to be investigated further. They did so by meeting almost regularly with the intent of developing a discourse that went beyond the immediacy of the moment, but firmly grasped an idea using the tools of improvisation. A framework was found, and they soon proceeded with the recording ...
