Eyevin Nonet
Eyevin Nonet is a Montréal-based jazz ensemble born out of admiration for the music of the late New-York saxophonist Thomas Chapin. The nonet was created by drummer/leader Ivan Bamford, who had previously formed a trio in tribute to Chapin; with the blessing of Chapin’s widow, the group expanded into a nonet — offering a broader, richer sound palette that channels Chapin’s adventurous spirit.
Since its inception, Eyevin Nonet has released recordings including the album Thomas Chapin III: Unearthed (2021), featuring previously unreleased compositions by Chapin bequeathed to the group by Chapins widow Terri Castillo Chapin
More recently, in 2025, Eyevin Nonet released Dialectics, their first album of original compositions — signaling a shift to establishing their own voice.
Musically, their sound draws on Chapin’s eclectic legacy — blending neo-bop, free jazz, avant-garde improvisation and a modern sensibility. The ensemble’s performances often feature dynamic interplay, unexpected shifts in texture, and a strong group cohesion that celebrates both individual expression and collective spontaneity.
