Instrumental Dave Chisholm 136 Pages ISBN: # 1940878152 Z2 Comics 2017 With Instrumental trumpeter/composer/cartoonist Dave Chisholm presents a black and white morality tale about a struggling young trumpeter and bandleader—with an accompanying soundtrack. There have been previous instances of visual/musical collaborations: I think of Alan Moore's The Birth Caul (and other “workings") that involved spoken word and music, in some cases later illustrated; more recently, songwriter Jonathan Coulton commissioned a graphic novel ...

Dave Chisholm: Instrumental

Read "Instrumental" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Trumpeter/composer Dave Chisholm has a creative skill outside of music: he's also an accomplished cartoonist. His graphic novel Instrumental tells the story of an aspiring trumpeter who almost loses his soul after receiving a cursed trumpet, and this album serves as the Soundtrack. The seven selections have titles paralleling the chapters in the graphic novel, but they are rarely directly programmatic; it's more a matter of mood. So the comic and the music each can be experienced alone, but there ...

Dave Chisholm: Calligraphy

Read "Calligraphy" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Trumpeter, composer and comic book writer Dave Chisholm made a confident recording debut with Radioactive (Self Produced, 2010), a big band album featuring five of his original tunes. On Calligraphy he takes a different approach, performing another set of originals in a quintet setting. Along with this paring-down of the ensemble, Chisholm's writing makes even more use of space and a “slow burn" approach to the development of mood and tension. Chisholm's trumpet tone is breathy and ...

Dave Chisholm: Radioactive

Read "Radioactive" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Radioactive was recorded in Salt Lake City in 2009, while bandleader/composer/trumpeter Dave Chisholm was working on the Master of Music degree at the University of Utah. Recording a debut album as leader with a 17-piece big band might be considered a tad hubristic, even for a Masters program--"start small" might be the received wisdom--but why not, if the chops are there to back it up? Chisholm's chops are there, instrumentally and compositionally; and so too are those of his young ...
