In 1960, pianist Freddie Redd composed and recorded The Music From the Connection. The music was originally composed for Jack Gelber's 1959 New York play The Connection, about jazz musicians and drug addiction. Redd's music was performed on stage by Redd (p), Jackie McLean (as), Michael Mattos (b) and Larry Ritchie (d). Some vocalists excel at lyric interpretation. They know how to tell the story of a song with subtlety and nuance. Other singers have such beautiful voices that they’d be a pleasure to listen to if they sang the periodic table set to a Brahms lullaby. It’s not easy to say which is Shirley Crabbe's strength, since she possesses both those talents in equal measure. Studio Rio: 'Brazil Connection'

JazzWax by Marc Myers
Back in the early late 1990s, before the proliferation of high-speed modems and iTunes, I spent most Saturday mornings at Tower Records near New York's Lincoln Center.
