Andrew Neil Hayes

At the forefront of Bristol’s contribution to the pulsing new UK jazz scene come Run Logan Run, an alchemical fusion of surging, polyrhythmic alt-breakbeats and screaming guttural saxophone.Propelled by the kinetic ferocity of Matt Brown’s drums and guided by soul deep melodies, motifs and cries unfurled from Andrew Neil Hayes’ tenor, the music that emerges is fiercely committed, questing and risk-taking. Since forming in 2016 the duo have earned a reputation for explosive live performances, full of raw power and visceral energy.

The duo have toured the UK extensively, sharing stages with the likes of Colin Stetson, Melt Yourself Down, Shabaka Hutchings, and The Bad Plus, and have performed at many European Jazz Festivals. In 2019 they received the Montreux Jazz Talent Award and in 2020 they were invited back to Switzerland as fellows of the Montreux Jazz Academy to play a special concert with John McLaughlin and members of Snarky Puppy. They have also worked with Danalogue & Betamax (The Comet Is Coming), Riaan Vosloo (Nostalgia 77), Dilip Harris (Brownswood / Ninja Tune) Matthew Bourne (Leaf Label) and Ill Considered.

“This is scorching energy music for the 21st century, with the psychedelic heaviness and glowing afterburn of Palm Unit, or Sonny Simmons with Moksha Samnyasin – a thunderous, beautiful soundworld forged on the Bristolian frontline of a new wave of social protest and historical awareness, and amid the strange silences of the world in lockdown. It’s hopeful, joyous and furious music for a world that might be, and bears witness to the era that might yet make it manifest.”

Meanwhile, in the west of the country, in the port city of Bristol, tenor saxophonist Andrew Neil Hayes and drummer Don Johnson were lighting the fuse of Run Logan Run, which inhabits a similar space. Although they often remain below the radar of the international jazz audience, British cities other than London support thriving jazz and beyond-jazz scenes, and the port of Bristol has a particularly fertile one. Among its luminaries are Run Logan Run, a duo comprising saxophonist Andrew Neil Hayes and drummer Matt Brown. Nature Will Take Care Of You, the group's fourth album, is the follow-up to 2021's For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers (Worm Discs) and it is ...

Run Logan Run: For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers

Tenor saxophone and drums albums have been at the heart of London's alternative jazz scene since its first stirrings around 2015. That year, saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, then members of singer Zara McFarlane's backing band, started tossing riffs and beats back and forth to each other during pre-gig soundchecks. In short order, the duo formed the semi-free Binker and Moses, and have since released four albums which are among the crown jewels of the ...
