Skyggespill: Morphing Between Spaces and Phases
By
Skyggespill (shadow play in Norwegian) is the moniker of Norwegian keyboards player, electronics and sound designer Kjetil Husebø for his first (and only) electronics recordings project. Husebø references local Norwegian and international sonic explorers like Biosphere (aka Geir Jenssen), Deathprod (aka Helge Sten, known from the acclaimed Supersilent outfit, who mastered this project), Christian Fennesz or Chris Watson and even modern composer György Ligeti as inspiring his own invented sounds.
The four pieces of this project blend concrete and abstract sounds into dense, cinematic and urban soundscapes. Excerpts from field recordings carefully ornament the industrial, always on-the- move, busy and chaotic soundscape of a modern city. "Morphing Between Spaces" sketches an elaborate web of alienated, urban sounds that crisscrosses each other, challenging any visitor to navigate within this sonic tumult. The short and noisy "Metathesiophobia" even aggravates the claustrophobic vibe but then "Gråklang" suggests a warm and accommodating sonic environmentpatient, gentle and fluid (with snippets of flowing water sounds) with only distant, threatening overtones, close in spirit to seventies meditative, space-rock suites. The last piece "Morphing Between Phases" recreates a nightmarish soundscape similar to the first piece but through slow, drone-like, rich sounds that intensify the effect of this engulfing sonic experience that gets otherworldly, deeper and darker.
Weird, disturbing yet totally arresting sonic experience.
