About Me
Chromatic harmonica and violinist, bandleader and composer, living in Oslo
Sondre Ferstad (b. 1991) is a Norwegian musician, composer, and chromatic harmonica player. A graduate of the Jazz Programme at NTNU in Trondheim, he was the first and remains the only student to complete a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance with chromatic harmonica as his principal instrument. Since graduating, he has released the critically acclaimed albums Miniamal (2018) and Snirkelsongar (2022), developing a distinctive melodic and harmonically rich musical language. Ferstad has collaborated with celebrated Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen, who wrote lyrics to his music and toured with his ensemble. In 2021, he was commissioned to compose a major work for Trondheim Jazz Festival, a project that sparked an intensive study of the violin. The instrument has since become an important part of his artistic expression. His latest project, Pieces of Wood, combines jazz, hymns-inspired songwriting, craftsmanship, and environmental themes in a musical exploration of forests and human relationships, inspired by the research of Suzanne Simard and the concept of Mother Trees. Based in Oslo, Ferstad works as a harmonica player, violinist, composer, and bandleader.
