My Jazz Story
1975. Dead of winter. I was abruptly and shockingly relocated to a new high school in the middle of my freshman year. Awkward, shy, knowing no
one, and bereft of friends, my only connection to anyone arose in the band room. As the new kid, I had to audition for concert band on my bottom-of-
the-line Bundy cornet. After being assigned a chair and settling in to share a music stand with a girl who was well-known and adored by her
classmates, I joined the eighth period practice. As I was packing up afterward, a few kids from my new section introduced themselves. They asked
where I had moved from and what kind of music I listened to. Without filter or forethought I blurted out that I had just bought “Groovin’ High” and
was listening to it non-stop. Now remember, this was 1975. I would not turn 14 for another six months. Everyone around me was enamored with
Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Nazareth, Foghat, Bad Company, or some other band of perceived rock gods. No one was listening to a bebop collection by
Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker that had been recorded thirty years earlier. I was immediately horrified by my confession and braced
myself for ridicule. But I was spared. The first-chair trumpet player said, “Cool.” The popular girl I had shared a stand with asked, “Can we hear it?”
and I was invited to an evening gathering—not quite a party, but close—at the home of the section leader the next Friday, where everyone in
attendance insisted that I join Jazz Band the following week. So, I did. And jazz has been my touchstone ever since.
