Ukrainian Jazz Waltz

Andrew David Perkins
Duration: 2:24

Written in 1916 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovich and titled “Shchedryk,” the song tells the tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful year that the family will have. For a Christmas concert, a choir director by the name of Oleksander Koshyts commissioned Leontovich to write a song based on Ukrainian folk melodies. Leontovich created a completely new work for choir. Now called “Carol of the Bells,” the song has become associated with Christmas.
